Good book!

This book is well organized and concisely written. Each chapter stands on its own and can be read independently, which fits my style and allows for reading it as time permits. The chapters each contain some theory or explanation as well as copious amounts of code and real world examples. The use cases were also helpful in understanding situations where the design patterns could be implemented.

I purchased the eBook version which had links embedded in the text for additional detail and in-depth explanations on related topics. I like to explore as I read and learn, so this was a welcome feature.

The only con for me was that it's written for Python 3, however, the concepts apply to Python 2 and other languages. Eventually I will move to Python 3 and this was a gave me a chance to try Python 3.

I recommend if you want to learn about design patterns and you're a Python user.

New ideas to refactor and optimize your code

If you need to find new ideas on how to optimize or make your code more easy to interpret this book will give you several examples of code structures to make it more efficient or more simple to interpret. The book writing style is a bit dry and it's not for beginners(you need to know what python is about and how to code with it or you will get lost) but the core content is sound so if you know your stuff and you want to learn new coding styles this book is for you.

Lovecraft's finest achievement. Indeed

This is the story that many critics consider H. P. Lovecraft's finest achievement. Indeed, the late Jim Turner, in his introduction to his Mythos anthology ETERNAL LOVECRAFT, makes so bold as to proclaim: "American novelist Ralph Ellison once suggested that most authors write only 'one good book,' though they may end up, Ellison allowed, 'publishing a lot more.' If we apply Ellison's observation to the fictional oeuvre of Howard Phillips Lovecraft, then surely Lovecraft's 'one good book'--in the sense of representing his definitive statement as a cosmic fantasist--is 'The Shadow Out of Time.'"

Re-reading the story to-night, I am once again amazed at how well Lovecraft wrote, and with what power he convey'd his story. One playful aspect of Lovecraft's writing that will go unnoticed by readers new to his work is the sometimes-subtle, sometime-not-so-subtle references to other Works in Lovecraft's oeuvre. I had forgotten that that Strange Dark One, Nyarlathotep, makes an early appearance in the story: "Lights burned in the house till late, and a lean, dark, curiously foreign-looking man called in an automobile." One cannot help but wonder what model of motor was driven by ye Crawling Chaos. There is a potent narrative power in Lovecraft's finest work, one that catches the imagination and thrills it to the story's end. It's rather uncanny, to have been reading this author for so many decades, and yet--to-night--to feel intoxicated by his genius as never before because of the power of his story-telling in "The Shadow out of Time."

As is the case with the others in this series of PS Publishing's ILLUSTRATED LOVECRAFT, this single volume of the story is definitive. The text used is the next-to-last corrected text edited by S. T. Joshi (his final version of all Lovecraft's texts may be found in H. P. LOVECRAFT COLLECTED FICTION: A VARIORUM EDITION, publish'd by Hippocampus Press). This small yet substantial volume is brilliantly illustrated by Pete Von Sholly, contains 13 (counting jacket) illustrations and/or photos by Sholly, a majority of them presented as two-page spread. The text of the tale has suffered in its early publications, including the Arkham House books; but the discovery of Lovecraft's original autograph manuscript, on the afternoon of January 17, 1995, has helped to restore the text so that it represents Lovecraft's authorial intentions. It is an AMAZING novelette, and I do not hesitate to call it a classic of American fiction. People sometimes complain that Lovecraft's "surprise" endings aren't surprising at all, being guessed long before such stories as "Pickman's Model" and others have reach'd their conclusion; but I don't think Lovecraft had any interest in writing surprise endings, but rather in composing endings that were CONFIRMATIONS of things clearly suggested during the course of story-telling.

This volume is filled with a number of essays: "The Variety of Existence in 'The Shadow out of Time'" by Paul Montelone, which is a substantial work of 16 printed pages; a charming essay by Pete Von Sholly, "The Shadows out of Plastic", concerning a plastic model kit of a Yithian beastie that actually never became a selling item; and my own wee essay, "'The Shadow out of Time' as Lovecraftian Horror", in which I discuss why this story is indeed a tale of powerful HORROR, one that has some of ye moft terrifying scenes in weird fiction. (I wrote the essay to protest the idea of some who insist that, had Lovecraft lived, he wou'd have abandoned horror altogether and concentrating on writing stories of science-fiction.)

As I write, there are three final volumes in this series that are forthcoming. These are great little books, if a bit pricey. They are excellent additions to any Lovecraft fan's bookshelf.

MY BUSINESS, YOUR PLEASURE is the perfect short novella with a well-developed romance set in a good paranormal world.

Justin has always wanted to explore a personal relationship with his business partner and sex demon, Elliot, but he'd be breaking his own rule of no messing with immortals. Justin decides to have a one night stand with any immortal to attempt to work out his attraction, but Elliot learns of his plans and shows up at the club. Elliot uses every trick in his seduction arsenal to convince Justin they should be partners in more ways than just business.

I loved this novella. Justin and Elliot are complete characters and I could see their attraction to each other. It's rare that an erotic novella manages to simultaneously build an emotional connection between the leads but this novella does it. The novella wisely had Justin and Elliot know each other well before the night their relationship changes so the romance develops in believable ways. I especially liked that Elliot is so open about his feelings for Justin and how he uses sex to show Justin. Justin's rule of not having a relationship with immortals is the perfect tension to keep the men apart initially and I really liked how this unfolds.

The other great thing about this novella is that it's set in a strong paranormal world but it doesn't overwhelm the romance. Elliot is a sex demon and how this plays into who he is and his relationship with Justin is all integrated so well. I like this world of immortals so well that I hope the author continues to set novellas in it.

MY BUSINESS, YOUR PLEASURE is a wonderful romance I highly recommend to MM readers.

About the Author

Maureen Duffy is a highly experienced family therapist with an active clinical and consulting practice that includes clients who have been injured as a result of mobbing. She was formerly Professor of Counseling at Barry University, where the counseling clinic is named in her honor. Currently, she is affiliated with Nova Southeastern University's program in qualitative research and with Massey University's program in discursive therapies. Her work in the area of social justice includes multiple articles, book chapters, and national and international presentations on mobbing, ethics, and restorative justice. Duffy serves on the editorial boards of several major family therapy journals and is an editor of The Qualitative Report.

Len Sperry is Professor of Mental Health Counseling at Florida Atlantic University and Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin, where for years, he directed the Division of Organizational Psychiatry and consulted widely with professional organizations and Fortune 500 corporations. He has published broadly on workplace issues, including six books on leadership and organizational dynamics, as well as articles and book chapters on workplace violence and mobbing. He was guest editor for special journal issues on "Aggression in the Workplace" and "Workplace Mobbing and Bullying."

Great book, topic, and coverage. Legislation should be at the Federal level it is so important. Never been disappointed by Oxford University Press.

This morbidly fascinating memoir-in-comics is one of the more frightening recollections of childhood bullying you're likely ever ever read. Rall grew up in the 1970s in Kettering, Ohio ("suburb of the damned"), a town of stunning homogeneity that concealed an undercurrent of absurd intolerance. An intelligent, "brown-haired, brown-eyed freak" with divorced parents and a French mother, Rall was routinely vilified by his unambitious, intellectual-hating classmates and relentlessly beaten and harassed by Brian, a strange and brutal kid he first encountered in junior high. Brian made Rall's life miserable for no discernible reason other than Rall's superficial social difference. Smaller than Brian and fearful of him, Rall was nevertheless equally cruel, devising indirect but gruesomely violent counterattacks. Rall's mother was powerless to stop these daily clashes, school officials were weirdly indifferent and the strange, primal conflict continued into high school. Puberty miraculously added eight inches and 12 pounds to Rall's frame, and he finally beat Brian into a bloody, senseless heap in the school hallway. Presented in Rall's angularly comic b&w drawings, the story alternates between a quirky poignancy and a thoughtful but bleak humor. With irony and introspection, Rall examines the effects of this bizarre experience on his development. He still often dreams of killing Brian but admits that "Brian made me stronger, but he also made me meaner, less trusting, hateful of hypermasculine men.... without him I might never have drawn cartoons, escaped Ohio or gotten laid."

YA-Political and social-commentary cartoonist Rall offers a fictionalized slice of his junior and senior high school experiences with the class bully. Because his story is told entirely from the perspective and with all the insight of the teenaged male protagonist, not only is the profanity profuse but other possibly offensive, yet realistically on-target, vocabulary abounds. Brian Koff may have been a bully but clearly young Rall offered him opportunity and excuse: the narrator shows himself to be somewhat conceited, defiantly classist, and ready to lash out with assorted weaponry. He hospitalizes Brian, plans his murder, and continues to demonstrate his own abilities to draw enemy blood all the way through high school. This is testosterone-driven fantasy in part, perhaps, but as anyone who remembers the cruel underbelly of adolescence can attest, events like the ones recorded here can be as much a part of the local school hallway culture as pinup pictures of movie stars. Rall's introduction memorializes a high school friend who chose suicide over responding with violence against his tormentors. Is there another way? Of course, but in real life, sometimes it is just plain impossible for kids to see that adolescence with all its evils isn't a permanent condition. Will this book speak to high school readers? Absolutely! But adults who have forgotten how gruesome those years can be also need to read it.

Known for his acerbic political cartoons, Rall turns his caustic gaze inward in an autobiographical graphic novel about his misery in junior high in suburban Ohio. He was an alienated nerd, tormented by a loutish, psychotic bully who, for no apparent reason, chose Rall as his personal victim. Teachers and other adults refused to help Rall, leaving him to deal with Brian through violence that started out defensive but gradually turned sadistically vengeful. The escalating battle forced Rall into an ultimate assault that he then saw as the only way to prevent being marked as a victim for the rest of his life. Two decades later, a more introspective Rall ponders the lasting effect of Brian's harassment on his personality. To this day, Rall's behavior remains confrontational and defensive; he wonders whether his superior attitude prompted the bully's abuse. Rall's memoir is fueled by the bitterness and anger that inform his editorial cartoons and sports their vaguely cubist figures and distinctive scratchboard technique that makes them look like punk woodcuts. Brilliant and true

I moved to the States from Alaska at about the same time as Ted Rall was in HS, to finish high school. This comic is the only thing I can think of that ever captured that era - [impolite word] "Dazed and Confused" for example.
I should add that the high school I went to (in Wisconsin) was a (Lutheran) theocracy to rival anything in Iran. While I was constantly getting beat on by a gang of openly white supremacist kids at the school, which was quite backward by Alaskan standards, I usually got the flack from school officials who were chummy with them. Other than the extremes of the ultraviolence, I think people should think twice before thinking this is some kind of exaggeration for effect by Rall. Ted Rall's visual style is great, too, and I was happy to see that people who bought My War with Brian also read Ruben Bollings, another superb comic genius. I think Rall is a good representative of us 30-somethings born in the 60s, too - a more or less Lost Generation between the baby-boomers and their echo generation, but which includes the whole Brat Pack and cartoonists like Tom Tomorrow, Rall, and, I believe, Bollings.

Shocking and savage yet rings with truth

Just when you think Ted Rall's, "My War with Brian," is going to be another run-of-the-mill victim story about bullying, this autobiographic tale takes a surprising shift when the misfit geek decides to fight back in shockingly savage fashion. And thus begins a full fledged war spanning the eternal length of time during Junior High and High School where Ted Rall learns to be a man, standing up for himself and exacting due punishment to those who strike at him, consequences be damned. At times, laugh out loud funny, this book will also shock in reminding you how brutal kids/teens can be to one another - the physical cruelty that Ted and Brian exact on one another is frightening in its murderous intent but just past that initial layer of shock comes a somewhat disturbing reminder of the cruelties adolescents face as they transition to adulthood.
