Excellent! John Sharp really knows how to teach C#

I retired early 15 years ago from being a Microsoft Windows Programmer. I wanted to see what was going on in the programming world today so I bought this book and downloaded Visual Studio 2015 Community. Windows programming today is a whole new ballgame from when I left. The tools are amazing and so is C#. The Kindle edition of this book running on my Nexus 9 tablet sitting next to my Microsoft Surface Book computer is really great. I'm very pleased with what John Sharp has done and I love the step-by-step approach John uses in his teaching. I'm really having a lot of fun with this combination.

I liked the Kindle edition so much that I ordered the paperback book too, but I sent it back to Amazon as unacceptable. After working with the Kindle edition on my Nexus 9 in glorious color, the paperback book in Black & White was a real letdown. Just try to follow the paperback's Black & White examples trying to see where the "yellow" highlighting and "green" cursors are and try to find the "red" squiggly lines and the "blue" icons. Why on earth would Microsoft Press screw up a great book like this with Black & White when it just cries out to be in color?

Don't bother with the more expensive Black & White paperback, get the less expensive Kindle edition and have full color.

Well written book with clean sample code

This is a well written book that covers quite a bit of ground in C#. While other reviewers at times have commented that they had difficulty with the sample code, I had none. Virtually all projects compiled perfectly with zero warnings let alone errors - as in zero errors. The book states clearly (or more accurately the errata) what you need to have downloaded. I am running Windows 10 with VS 2015 sp2 community edition. Also I have the AdventureWorks database installed on SQL Server 2014. I only have 6G of RAM on a Toshiba laptop
The ONLY difficulty I had was with Chapter 27 where the NuGet package manager had difficulties with the fact that I was running out of sample code zip-expanded too far down a directory tree. Apparently, it doesn't like full directory paths > a certain number (I think it was 288). So I copied the sample code directory to come off the C:\ drive. Problem disappeared and it compiled cleanly (aside from an unused "e" variable warning).

This book is very well written. It's a smooth easy read for a very complex subject. I've been programming in C# for a very long time but I bought it because I couldn't find a good book on UWP. I skipped right to the 4th section on UWP and I feel like I just found exactly what I needed. I'm looking forward to using it as reference.

Vague rehash of better books

"A Guide to Manufacturing Native Replicas with Modern Tools" might be a more accurate title. Nothing new offered here, just skimpy information that lacks many details and has the feel of material skimmed from other, more informative books. Birch clearly has experience with some of the skills yet his ability to translate knowledge to paper is lacking. Someone who knows what they are doing can fill in the often large gaps in the information, but then they don't need the book, do they? I always look for the one piece of new information that merits the purchase of a book and was hard pressed to find one here. I should add that Burch is a "professional" author and writes from that vantage point rather than from that of a practitioner of the skills he covers.

About the Author
Roy F. Baumeister is currently the Eppes Eminent Scholar and Professor of Psychology at Florida State University. He received his Ph.D. in social psychology from Princeton in 1978 and did a postdoctoral fellowship in sociology at the University of California at Berkeley. He spent over two decades at Case Western Reserve University. He has also worked at the University of Texas, the University of Virginia, the Max-Planck-Institute, the VU Free University of Amsterdam, the University of California at Santa Barbara, the Russell Sage Foundation, the University of Bamberg (Germany), and Stanford's Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences. Baumeister's research spans multiple topics, including self and identity, self-regulation, interpersonal rejection and the need to belong, sexuality and gender, aggression, self-esteem, meaning, and self-presentation. He has received research grants from the National Institutes of Health and from the Templeton Foundation. He has over 500 publications, and his 31 books include EVIL: INSIDE HUMAN VIOLENCE AND CRUELTY, THE CULTURAL ANIMAL, MEANINGS OF LIFE, and the New York Times bestseller WILLPOWER: REDISCOVERING THE GREATEST HUMAN STRENGTH. The Institute for Scientific Information lists him among the handful of most cited (most influential) psychologists in the world. He has received several major awards, including the William James Fellow award (their highest honor) from the Association for Psychological Science, and the Jack Block Award from the Society for Personality and Social Psychology.

Brad J. Bushman is a professor of communication and psychology at The Ohio State University, where he holds the Margaret Hall and Robert Randal Rinehart Chair of Mass Communication. He is also a professor of communication science at the VU University Amsterdam, the Netherlands in the summer. For about 30 years he has conducted research on the causes, consequences, and solutions to the problem of human aggression and violence. He co-chaired the National Science Foundation youth violence advisory committee that was formed in the wake of the Newtown school shooting. He also is a member of President Obama's committee on gun violence. He has published over 170 peer-reviewed journal articles. According to Google Scholar, his articles have been cited over 25,000 times. He is ranked #2 in citations among communication scholars. In 2013 he received the 2013 Ig Nobel Psychology Prize (signed by three Nobel Laureates) for research with French colleagues titled "'Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder': People who think they are drunk also think they are attractive." In 2014 he received the Distinguished Lifetime Contribution to Media Psychology and Technology, American Psychological Association. His research has challenged several myths (e.g., violent media have a trivial effect on aggression, venting anger reduces aggression, violent people suffer from low self-esteem, violence and sex on TV sell products, warning labels reduce audience size). One colleague calls him the "myth buster." His research has been published in the top scientific journals (e.g., Science, PNAS), and has been featured extensively in the mass media (e.g., BBC, New York Times, NPR).

I am a graduate and yet enjoy reading this book

This is a must read book for anybody who is interested in human nature and what makes people tick. The narative is very engaging and it is packed with the latest research. It is very well presented and structured. When ever I read a section of this book I go away thinking about the topic. I am a graduate and yet enjoy reading this book. It is very strong on its teaching/pedagogy quality. And on its separate topics. It has a great applied section. I live in Europe and was pleased that it included European research.

I bought this book extremely cheap. The 4th edition really is not different from this edition. My professor has the 4th, and it's pretty much word-for-word the same book except with the page numbers. Helpful textbook!

This book is wonderfully readable considering that it leans toward the academic. Some of Newman's arguments reveal how very difficult it is to comprehend Hildegard's theology when we cannot fully appreciate her situation. But at least you won't feel that Newman is too sympathetic with Hildegard!

A fun read, but not one that I would take as a definitive source.

Great story, great message

I read this series back in February of 2013. But, I remember everything! My review was this...

Oh my thoughts could just run wild thinking about Luca. Wow this book was hot, sexy, honest, and relateable. I loved not only the story but also the message Jasinda sends to your not so thin girls. This book is a book about your average girl by average I mean not stick thin (cause lets face it not every girl has a perfect body). She does an amazing job at delivering a wonderful romantic story (yet again) but also sending messages to the readers. She tells you to love yourself for who you are...be happy with yourself.

That being said...I think you should read this book for sure. Jasinda is becoming more and more my favorite author with every book I read. She is a wonderfully skilled writer that is for certain. I guarantee that you will not only fall in love with the stories that she writes, but also the messages and confidence her books will give you!!!
Now go enjoy some amazingly epic writing and see for yourself!

One of my favorite series.

This was the first series I had ever read by Jasinda Wilder. It continues to be my favorite out of all of her books. I believe this series deserves more recognition. I loved seeing Delilah grow through her struggles. The struggles only made her stronger. I also loved Luca and his family. They are a close knit group that treated Delilah as one of their own, even though they didn't have to.

Defying old premises

The grass isn't always greener on the other side

Americans may be astonished to learn that Britain's Constitution, unlike our own, was not written all at once, but has evolved gradually over time through accumulated legislation and is a largely unwritten assemblage. There was no Constitutional Convention to discuss, debate, and draft the guiding principles of the nation; there was no sudden rupture or rift that necessitated a clean break with the past as with American Independence. As Britain faces myriad constitutional crises and controversies in recent times there is suddenly a wave of potential constitutional changes being discussed and proposed in Parliament and in public. Among the ideas is to create a written constitution.

For Americans this is puzzling and confusing as English Common Law helps to shape and form so much of our society. While the Westminster system of unifying the legislative and executive branches is a bit alien to Americans the idea of scrapping what has worked for England for centuries seems an odd idea indeed. Why fix what isn't broke? But the reality, as pointed out by Bogdanor, is that Britain is trying to move with the times. Joining the European Economic Community in 1973 set Britain on the path towards modernizing its constitution as more power flowed towards Brussels. But Bogdanor argues that the piecemeal changes occurring since that time have failed to revive and rejuvenate British politics, but have instead redistributed power rather than democratizing the political process. Bogdanor argues for divesting power to the people and is clearly a fan of proportional representation, arguing for primaries to select parliamentary candidates as opposed to the old first-past-the-post rule, increasing use of referendums and the use of citizens' assemblies. While that sounds good on paper one need only look at the mess California has gotten into thanks to the referendum process. And while the primary process would make elections somewhat more democratic it would be the death of typically quick British elections as witnessed by the marathon contests here in America.

While the timing of "The New British Constitution" couldn't have been better, and it is quite well written, it remains a polemic with a clear agenda. Bogdanor is clearly looking to establish a dialog and makes persuasive arguments, but the reality is there are equally persuasive counterarguments which aren't made here. As Americans regularly groan about the inefficiency of our country's political system it boggles the mind why Britain would want to adopt some of the same processes. The Westminster system cannot be that badly broken to warrant such an injudicious fix.

Misses the point

Hasn't the learned professor noticed that our new constitution is the EU Constitution?

This EU Constitution installs a new, more powerful, semi-permanent President and a Foreign Minister, posts that no other international organisation has.
The Constitution guarantees the free movement of persons, capital, goods and services, plus the `freedom of establishment'. This new freedom appears to mean giving the Establishment whatever it wants. Under this `freedom', the European Court of Justice has ruled that Finnish ferry operator Viking Line can ignore its collective agreements with Finnish unions, re-flag its vessels to Estonia and hire local crews on lower pay. The RMT warns that employers will use the ruling to cut wages across the EU because every industrial action `restricts the right of freedom of establishment'.

The EU Constitution spells out the EU's new goals of lowering customs and other barriers and of ending all controls over foreign direct investment. This would leave us defenceless against foreign takeovers and Chinese and Middle Eastern sovereign wealth funds.

Crucially, the EU Constitution says that EU law will overrule national law. It extends EU rule to justice and home affairs. It gives the EU the right to decide the common commercial policy, and policies over customs, fisheries, money (for eurozone members) and competition. The authors admit, "No other international organisation has such a structure." The EU may not be a `superstate', but its Constitution is a huge step towards a new state.

Before the 2005 election, the three parliamentary parties all pledged to hold a referendum on the Constitution, so whoever won we should have had the referendum. We must have this promised referendum; otherwise, where is the democracy?

The real community dentistry in most of the world

All other books like european books about the subject, are produced on a view embarassed for central, uniform and national health plans. This book make present in literature, the reality of many kinds of dental services delivery, like the state and private market. This aproach is more close with the real situation for most countries, speciality in plural societys.
For this reasons, that book is a powerfull toll for all Dentists interessed in knowing "how is" the actual basis that are building a future of our profession.

Essential reading for the dental public health professional

Burt and Eklund have taken a good thing and made it better. The new edition of "Dentistry, Dental Practice, and the Community" maintains the attention to detail and liberal referencing that was found in the 4th edition, but it adds tables and charts that are easier to read and tighter organization of the chapters such that common topics flow together more readily. Congratulations on a job well done.

Freaking amazing! I'm not going to get all flowery and ...

Freaking amazing! I'm not going to get all flowery and sentimental because Bukowski I don't think would have appreciated it or thought it too trite expressing the elite-est "cuteness".

Bukowski wasn't cute or pretty in his writing...he wrote what he saw around him with an awake and aware in-the-moment presence that is reality. Reality is not pretty or kind. I love his writing for that.

Also I found the words to his dead love in the poems "for Jane: with all the Love I had, Which Was Not Enough:", "Notice", and "for Jane" more touching than anything I have read in a long time. The grief he felt was enormous, world wrecking and I identified with that grief since I lost my husband and soul mate two years ago. I cried on the evening train reading these poems and found myself saying aloud "He KNEW!"

No one that has lost such an integral part of themselves is able to express that sort of gut wrenching of a tribute without having truly loved and suffered greatly.

He made me laugh, think, gasp at the rawness of life I remember seeing living in the outskirts of San Francisco in the 70's. He took down a memory lane of my own childhood and re-examine myself in a way I haven't in a very, very long time.

I never met you, Chuck, but I feel like I knew you, I would buy you a drink at the races if I could. Thank you for being so brutishly honest and more clean in your observations about the world than 80% of the population.

Bukowski clean? Oh, yeah.

He stripped down things to what they actually are instead of what society likes to pretend them to be. That to me is a clean, healthy lungful of fresh air! He was vulgar in his language, but in case you haven't really stepped out of your cubicle or hide-y hole...the world IS vulgar, uncivilized and mean and a vast majority of us in the lower classes (which is damn near anyone under a million anymore) lives with that. We're your elderly on the pensions and social security, waitresses, garbage men, retail sales people, and secretaries. You know, the ones the upper classes can't live without because we are the professional maids and nannies and buttwipers making minimum wage to slightly over, but still in the poverty level that make their world go round. We see the unsanitized and unedited truth. Mother Nature is one cruel mother. Bukowski had the balls to say it!

Great Book!

This is an excellent compilation of Mr. Bukowski's poems and stories. You'll enjoy this one! It arrived quickly, and it was in much better shape than was stated- it was like new- and it was a nice price, too.

"I Have Been Alone But Seldom Lonely"

THE PLEASURES OF THE DAMNED is a collection of Charles Bukowski's poems, 548 pages of them, many of them from earlier volumes of poetry, some of them never before published. For anyone familiar with Bukowski, there are few if any surprises here, rather a healthy sampling of this iconoclast's poetry. So very autobiographical, many of these poems are about the things Bukowski loved: the races, cats (you can learn from them), booze, poetry (he calls himself a poetry junkie), Wagner, sex (like Mahler, you do not rush it), some women. He can write a paean to a lover in "The Shower" but then say in another poem that American women, as opposed to Japanese women, "will kill you like they tear a lampshade." He is not reticent in writing about people and things he hates as well: some writers, especially Hemingway, whom he describes as "just a drunk"-- the irony is that in "a clean, well-lighted place," his description of Hemingway's use of his literary reputation to reel women in "one at a time" sounds like Bukowski himself-- critics, mindless work. (He pictures workers trapped in jobs that go nowhere as having "goldfish security.)

Nothing was immune from Bukowski's pen. Apparently he could write about any subject. There are poems here on the killing of elephants in Vietnam, a grammar school bully remembered, the ignorance of youth, a trip to the doctor, picturing himself in a nursing home, a conversation with death, an old car ("a poor man's miracle"), the abuse that both he and his mother suffered at the hands of his father (his mother had "the saddest smile I ever knew"), the homeless, the old, poor, sick and dying, throwing a radio out a window, etc., etc.

No one would say that Bukowski wrote "pretty" poems. On the other hand, we cannot deny that many of them go straight to the bone. In "eating my senior citizen's dinner at the Sizzler" (what a horrendous image) markers in modern cemeteries are "flat on the ground, it's much more pleasant for passing traffic." His world is inhabited by a sixty-five-year-old man with cancer who kills his sixty-six-year-old wife who has Alzheimer's and then kills himself and a house that is sad because it is inhabited with people who have mindless, dead-end jobs. For many of the people Bukowski writes about, "it's a lonely world/of frightened people,/just as it has always/been." On the other hand, in the poem entitled "mind and heart" (p. 523), he acknowledges that we are all alone, "forever alone" but goes on to say that "I have been alone but seldom lonely."

Reading Bukowski reminds you of Walt Whitman and Allen Ginsberg--although he certainly is not derivative of any other writer-- but a case can be made that he is a lot closer in his mood and world view to some of the darker poems of both Robert Frost and Emily Dickinson than he probably would have acknowledged. There is a place in the parade of poets for anyone who speaks the truth: the Robert Frosts, the Emily Dickinsons, the Donald Halls, the Edwin Arlington Robinsons along with the Charles Bukowskis.
