Probably the best reader on deconstruction available today...Anyone interested in broadening their idea of what is at stake in deconstruction cannot afford to ignore this volume...A must for philosophy and literature courses. An extensive collection of passages by a wide variety of authors. I welcome this volume warmly as important and significant. This is an excellent volume. McQuillan has balanced nicely well-known texts by Derrida or others with texts that are hard to find, untranslated into English, or even still unpublished. A very useful volume not only for those who need an introduction to deconstruction, but as well for scholars who will be able quickly to find these essays and discover others they did not know. -- Peggy Kamuf, University of Southern California Probably the best reader on deconstruction available today...Anyone interested in broadening their idea of what is at stake in deconstruction cannot afford to ignore this volume...A must for philosophy and literature courses. About the Author
Martin McQuillan is Professor of Literary Theory and Cultural Analysis and Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Kingston University, UK, where he is also Co-Director of The London Graduate School. Deconstruction Revealed
By Andrew C. Smith
Martin McQuillan has complied groups of related essays that illuminate the often dark and mysterious topic of deconstruction. While not for the faint of heart, Deconstruction: A Reader begins with an introduction by McQuillan which is one of the best overviews of deconstuction around. Easy to read and simple to follow, McQuillan's intro leads the reader through labrynthine complexities while defining all the tricky terms as they appear. Continual references to essays within the book also make it easy to find the essay that most interests you. With the deconstructive project deciphered, a wealth of perspective knowledge is contained in the 50+ essays. Organized by field of interest -- philosophy, literature, culture, etc.. -- the effects of deconstruction can easily be examined within each section. I particularly enjoy the first section which contains essays by Freud, Marx, Heidegger and more. These snipits from larger works enlighten the reader of deconstruction's precursors -- how can you know where you are going if you don't know where you can from? The remaining sections are brilliantly framed by opening and closing remarks from the daddy of deconstruction: Derrida. While many of the essays are deeply intellectual and profound, many are accessible with the information presented in the intro, but after the easier essays are understood and internalized, the more difficult ones become available.
Overall, this reader is a great overview of the deconstructive project and it's implications. For beginners, the intro cannot be raved about enough. It is helpful in the extreme. For more advanced deconstruction theorists, the essays provide a deconstructive perspective on many issues and in many ways. For anybody that writes on or is interested in the subject, I highly recommend this "handbook."

What is deconstruction?
By Alan
Deconstruction has been a hot topic for many years, and everyone has been creating a buzz around 'it.' But what exactly is deconstruction? Well it's not a literary theor or a practice. It is an all encompassing word that can be replaced by any number of words that have an unequal but similar meaning: supplementarity, allegory, etc. This book provides a good introduction to the many facets of Deconstruction that allows us to think of this term and all that it encompasses. The introduction is especially good and gives a person a quick overview of the work if you know nothing about it. In addition, the essays in the book are not readily understandable at first read but is a great work to slowly meander through the paragraphs and deconstruct any meaning that you can for yourself. Enjoy!

The Sea Dayaks of Borneo, with Illustrations, by Edwin Herbert Gomes

The Dayak culture of Borneo has long fascinated people, since the first outsiders entered the huge Island of Borneo. This unique and often misunderstood culture, has even influenced the English language with the term, “head hunters.”
Borneo has long been considered the last frontier on Earth, with ‘wild’ tribes still living inside dense jungles, with a fierce and proud cultural history. This frontier over 150 years ago was one of adventure, and discovery, were jungle trails led to the first meetings with the Dayak tribes, that inhabited Borneo.

The author Edwin Herbert Gomes, was one such adventurer, who in the mid 1850’s entered Borneo, and discovered the Sea Dayaks, a tribe that lived from the sea, rather than the land. Carrying a basic camera, and a mission to be-friend this untouched tribe, he wrote and photographed, one of the most unique tribal communities in the old World.

Discover another World, and through the images inside this book, meet the people, that formed one of the 'lost' civilizations of Asia.

I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot

A MEMOIR BY THE YOUNGEST RECIPIENT OF THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE

"I come from a country that was created at midnight. When I almost died it was just after midday."

When the Taliban took control of the Swat Valley in Pakistan, one girl spoke out. Malala Yousafzai refused to be silenced and fought for her right to an education.

On Tuesday, October 9, 2012, when she was fifteen, she almost paid the ultimate price. She was shot in the head at point-blank range while riding the bus home from school, and few expected her to survive.

Instead, Malala's miraculous recovery has taken her on an extraordinary journey from a remote valley in northern Pakistan to the halls of the United Nations in New York. At sixteen, she became a global symbol of peaceful protest and the youngest nominee ever for the Nobel Peace Prize.

I AM MALALA is the remarkable tale of a family uprooted by global terrorism, of the fight for girls' education, of a father who, himself a school owner, championed and encouraged his daughter to write and attend school, and of brave parents who have a fierce love for their daughter in a society that prizes sons.

I AM MALALA will make you believe in the power of one person's voice to inspire change in the world.

A Look Inside I Am Malala Girls attending Malala’s school in Pakistan. The Headmistress of Malala’s school. The seat that Malala sat in. A beautiful view of the Swat valley, where Malala is from.

Review
"The touching story will not only inform you of changing conditions in Pakistan, but inspire your rebellious spirit."―Matthew Love, Time Out New York

"Ms. Yousafzai has single-handedly turned the issue of the right of girls-and all children-to be educated into headline news. And she is a figure worth hearing."―Isabel Berwick, The Financial Times

"Wise beyond her years...."―Annie Gowen, Marie Claire

"Riveting.... Co-written with Christina Lamb, a veteran British journalist who has an evident passion for Pakistan and can render its complicated history with pristine clarity, this is a book that should be read not only for its vivid drama but for its urgent message about the untapped power of girls.... It is difficult to imagine a chronicle of a war more moving, apart from perhaps the diary of Anne Frank. With the essential difference that we lost that girl, and by some miracle, we still have this one."―Marie Arana, Washington Post

"Remarkable...a must-read, first-person account of her journey through global terrorism, her brave, encouraging parents, and her own fight for girls' education."―MarieClaire.com

"The victory of Malala Yousafzai is that she's just getting started."―Mary Elizabeth Williams, Salon

"Briskly written but full of arresting detail.... Striking [and] surprising..."―Jill Lawless, Associated Press

"Ms. Yousafzai's stature as a symbol of peace and bravery has been established across the world..."―Salman Masood, The New York Times

"Not only has Malala Yousafzai become an international symbol of inspiration and bravery, but her survival instilled educators with courage-and is slowly helping make Pakistani schools safer."―Nick Schifrin, ABC.com

"For a teenage girl in a distant corner of the globe to spark life into this movement-against overwhelming odds-is truly extraordinary. The world must not allow Malala's message to die."―Dallas Morning News

"Her powerful message remains undiluted."―Tina Jordan, Entertainment Weekly

"In simple, clear writing, I AM MALALA gives a rare and moving first-person glance into what it's like to be a teenager in a country seized by extremists who stand against the basic freedoms you believe in."―Krystin Arneson, Bustle

"Malala matters....In her modesty and dignity, she should be Islam's beloved daughter, her journey a return to the early promise of Muslim modernism."―Fouad Ajami, New York Post

"Incredibly inspirational.... Malala is intelligent and fiery with dreams of changing the world, but the book has the added benefit of being a true story that is easily interwoven with important global issues such as human rights, development, education, and peace.... If there is one thing that I AM MALALA should teach us, it is to look beyond Manichean narratives of good and evil. It is important to applaud Malala for the awareness she has built around important issues like education for young women."―Cristina Maza, PolicyMic

"Riveting.... [Malala's] clear voice [is] beautifully captured by Lamb."―Rafia Zakaria, Ms. Magazine

"A gripping story.... What makes this book so important is not just the universal value of Malala's cause.... It's the relevance of her story to one of the most vexing security questions in today's crazy world...."―Trudy Rubin, Philadelphia Inquirer

"An inspiring, clearly written memoir that offers a glimpse of an extraordinary young woman and the confounding world from which she comes."―Karen Sandstrom, Cleveland Plain Dealer

"One hears some ghosts of Anne Frank in reading I AM MALALA, the flightiness, effervescence and, well...girlishness of an adolescent girl flung once again the indifferent violence of inhuman men, like flowers hurled against a stone wall."―Leonard Pitts Jr., Miami Herald

"An eye-opener in the fight for girls' education equality."―More

"The voice that beams, 'I am Malala' is the voice that continues to meet the assassin's challenge. It is the voice of a courageous campaigner who still fights for girls' education. The voice of an icon who may one day be able to return to her country, but who even from afar symbolizes its noblest cause."―Shehryar Fazli, Los Angeles Review of Books

"A story for each and every girl who chooses to break societal taboos, challenge the clergy, declare war against illiteracy and believe in the power of the pen."―Daud Khattak, Newark Star Ledger

"[A] vivid autobiography.... Yousafzai possesses an eloquence beyond her years, but her touching asides drive home the fact that she's also very much a 16-year-old girl.... Captivating and surprisingly personal."―Erika W. Smith, Bust

"Like millions around the world, I draw strength from brave Malala's example.... Malala is a testament that women everywhere will not be intimidated into silence. We will make our voices heard."―Gabrielle Giffords, Time magazine's "TIME 100"

"Compelling. It's a brave girl's tale in an unsafe country, and it reveals her fierce determination to make the world a better place."―Michael Taube, Washington Times

"How did Yousafzai have the courage, at 15, to stand up to the Taliban in her native Pakistan? Her memoir, written less than a year after she nearly died for her efforts, will open your eyes."―People

A Must Read For Tweens And Teens
By Kellie
My 11-year old son read this and was so touched and inspired by Malala's story. He normally only likes to read sci-fi, so I was shocked when he came back to me after reading the book with tears in his eyes, saying how grateful and inspired this book was for him. Nothing has ever moved him the way this story did. I highly recommend this story to any Tweens and teens. It is sure to inspire empathy and understanding.

An amazing story from a remarkable young lady
By CSMujahid
I downloaded this book minutes after midnight on its first day, and 14 hrs later I have finished it cover to cover. I have been married to a Pakistani for 14 yrs, and have repeatedly asked my husband, "Why do the Pakistanis put up with this"...or that as situations have arisen over the yrs. The best answers I have gotten are the same mentioned in this book. Corruption & fear. It is so wonderful to see a father & his daughter take a stand for their right for something as simple as going to school that so many of us take for granted every day.
Although I have never been to any of the 'villages' I have visited Pakistan once & was a bit surprised by the conditions in one of the larger cities. The Swat valley does sound beautiful thanks to the wonderful mental pictures I got from the very vivid text. It really is ashame that this area is no longer available for tourist, be they Pakistani or international. I also accompanied an in-law to a doctor's while in Pakistan, and as a retired RN, I am really amazed that Malala survived this ordeal. I have little doubt that it definitely was not her time to die no matter what the Taliban tried. God....Allah....must have other plans and no man will change that.

A 5-STAR STORY WITH A 6-STAR HEROINE, BUT 2-STAR NARRATIVE WRITING; I RECOMMEND THE YOUNG ADULT VERSION INSTEAD
By The Literacy Advocate
The story of Malala Yousafzai is remarkable in every way, and she is an amazing, courageous young lady. Her story is astounding; the circumstances that she was forced to live through, and her bravery and sense of purpose, brought world focus to the tragedies in her homeland. This reviewer recognizes the essential significance of the subject matter and the tremendous role model which Malala is, but the story itself was poorly written. In televised speeches, Malala is more compelling and has much more presence than this narrative provided her. The writing is extremely choppy, going backward and forward in time with confusing and unbalanced frequency. The narration is rambling throughout and repetitive in many places, It reads like a poorly edited young adult novel. Perhaps the desire to preserve Malala's recollections as closely as possible to her notes resulted in lack of editing? I read this book along with a team of teachers and four high school classes of students, and nearly everyone I worked with agreed that the story was outstanding, but the writing was so poor it made the book a difficult and frustrating read.

Ironically, the newer, young adult version of this book is far superior in terms of structure and style, and is therefore much smoother and more readable. The YA edition is called I AM MALALA: HOW ONE GIRL STOOD UP FOR EDUCATION AND CHANGED THE WORLD. In my opinion, this YA edition is superior to its adult counterpart, and I recommend it highly. The YA version is co-authored by Patricia McCormick, an accomplished and decorated YA novelist (and a National Book Award finalist) who has written compelling novels on a number of tragic and realistic topics which affect young adults in various parts of the world. Her influence in helping frame Malala's story in unmistakable and eliminates many of the pitfalls which the title being reviewed here was not able to avoid.

This (adult) edition of I AM MALALA is a 5-star story with a 6-star heroine, but 2-star narrative writing.

Boundaries of the Soul: The Practice of Jung's Psychology, by June Singer

After thirteen printings and with nearly 100,000 copies in print since its publication twenty years ago, Boundaries Of The Soul has become recognized as THE classic introduction to Jung and the practice of Jung's psychology. The book has been described as "the clearest and most coherent exposition of Jung's total thought," by Robertson Davies, and Alan Watts has called Dr. Singer "one of the great masters of the art." Now, in a completely revised edition of Boundaries Of The Soul, Dr. Singer incorporates the latest developments in Jungian psychology over the last two decades, particularlv in the areas of masculine/feminine relationships, the use of psychotherapeutic drugs, and the evolution of Jung's concept and personality types and its application both clinically and in the world of business and industry. In addition, the case histories, so central to understanding many of Jung's concepts, have been re-examined and revised where necessary to correspond to the spirit of today's world. The updated edition of Boundaries Of The Soul should reaffirm the book's long-standing reputation as the best introduction to Jung's thought available.

A rich & deep introduction to Jung
By OwlSong
I first read this wonderful book some 30-odd years ago, and I've returned to it many times since. It remains one of the best introductions to Jung's thought & basic concepts that I know. Singer's personal touch, both in her own case histories & her autobiographical anecdotes, add to the book; the feeling is one of listening to a wise woman, rather than hearing a dry lecture. Singer not only knows her material intellectually, she knows it in her soul, and that comes through on every page. This book made me start paying attention to my dreams, and gave me a much-needed framework for understanding my life at a crucial time, when I was most in need of such a framework.

While the revised & updated edition is excellent, I'd also recommend reading the original 1972 edition if you can find it. For example, Singer's chapter on Jung & the Counterculture is superb, and not nearly as dated as the author herself believed; in any case, it provides a valuable on-the-spot account of Jungian thought & its intersection with the 1960s, the impact of which is still being felt today. Yet it's also fascinating to read the follow-up stories of some of her patients in the newer edition.

Jung is a much better known name today than when this book first appeared, but his thought isn't always as well understood as it might be. Let Singer take you on a revelatory tour of the Psyche & learn far more about both Jung & yourself than you ever imagined. Highly recommended!

A 1st step in reading about Jung before reading Jung
By JG
A wonderful accessible book written in warmth and sincerity and utilizing real case examples throughout in furthering understanding the applicability of Jung whose impact remains paramount.
Obviously a well studied book by Jungian practicioners, this books appeal is it's lucid prose and style, never dry, written by a then leading Jungian therapist carefully in tune with her then radical climate of the day.
The book remains contemporary and not dated with time especially since the revised edition was written in 1994 and changed where she deemed appropriate.
The major concepts of Jung are explained here through case studies in addition to great insights, such as her take on the understanding of Plato as distinct from Aristotle and the fusion that Jung accomplished between Adler and Freud with his development of his Personality Theory.
A very useful, enjoyable and needed book allowing one to enjoy the appetizer with all the historical background and theories dealt with prior to relishing Jung's actual text.

Couldn't put it down!!
By Kindle Customer
I read this book so fast. Definitely neglecting household chores to finish it! Lol I love that it starts off with Bailey and Zoe at Mardi Gras in New Orleans since Fat Tuesday is this coming Tuesday and I live just 45 minutes from NOLA. But I truly can relate to Bailey the main character , her sense of humor and her fears. The story keeps moving the author doesn't waste a lot of time on unnecessary scenery , just the right amount to help for you paint your own pic of how and where the scenes are being played out. Great book . I can't wait for the second one. I know Chloe and Baileys relationship will grow. And without any spoilers I just can't wait to see what will happen next. Thanks to the author for a cool new series to get into . I am an avid zombie apocalypse reader!!! And its getting harder and harder to find good exciting fresh and original zombie series!! A must read!!

Totally awesome!

First off, I wanted to start reading more. So I got the Wattpad app, mainly becuse I own a Crackberry. I totally flipped for this book. I am very excited this book made it to Amazon, I had to purchase right away and show my support for the one and only NDI. You will now what I'm talking about after you read it.

This book really grabbed me an held me the entire way, it did this because it is very well written and really made me think about the story and the people in the story when I was not reading it. I would be sitting in the car waiting for a sales call and just think "what whould I do if it were me". I am a work-a-holic and this book finally gave me something else to look forward to. Yes I need a hobby, and it very well may be reading.

I recommend this book for any one into Z's, walkers, crawlers, raomers, whatever you want to call them. This is a great peice of writting, and yeas, I cannot say enough about this book, and this author, NDI.

Watch for this writer- totally amazing things to come, such as the second book, which left me wanting more and made me feel like a giddy school girl when updates were posted.

Fairly good first novel
By Kindle Customer
Has a few new twists on the old standby unexplained zombie SHTF story. Told from the POV of a moderately wealthy Canadian college coed partying in New Orleans with a friend. Zombies show up. Mass panic ensues. Luckily, she meets up with a few guys, goes to a gun store, gets guns, ammo, sound suppressors (I see them in ALL the local gunstores here in the states) and teaches herself how to shoot (and presumably clean) all the hardware...
All in good fun . Occasionally unrealistic, but entertaining. I'm sure I'll read the follow-up. The author would be well served by taking a handgun course or three. And an EMT course (crazy glue for deep, oozing wounds is a non-starter)...

This could very well become the most valuable book in your library
By Marvin D. Pipher
If this book's author had been half as clever in choosing his book's title as the scammers about whom he was writing are in defrauding the public, he would likely have sold millions of copies. He should have! For this book is more than worth its price and, for any given reader, may someday be worth it's weight in gold. That day will come when a reader has his or her identity stolen and desperately needs to know what in the world to do.

But the book goes far and beyond simply the dreaded identity theft. It also provides valuable insights into all manner of Internet, mail, and telephone scams and frauds: including, among others, fraudulent charities; area code scams (809, 284, & 876); check fraud; expired credit card scams; card not present scams; debt elimination and reverse mortgage scams; phishing; pharming; cheap medications from Canada; telemarketing scams; Medicare fraud; overpayment scams; and IRS related scams. And, in addition to identifying the scams, the author also explains how the "fraudsters" set them up; what the "lies" are that suck the victims in; what the scams actually are (in all their variations); what "key words" help identify them as a scams; and how you, the victim de jure, can protect yourself.

The insights and advice offered in this book are so valuable and specific that it should be read by every man and woman in the United States (US). For although many of these scams originate and are executed from outside the US, the US is generally the target of choice. It almost goes without saying that under certain unfortunate circumstances, this may very well be the most valuable book you could have at hand. I'd buy it, read it, and keep it handy if I were you.

Another insightful book from Jeffrey Robinson

Another insightful and entertaining financial crime book by Jeffrey Robinson. It should be part of everyone's financial crime library. I provided it as a handout to 35 graduate students in my Anti-Money Laundering class. The book served as a means of providing insight into the various scams, as well as, a tool to instruct the class on how to protect themselves and their families against these frauds. I am eagerly awaiting Mr. Robinson's next financial crime book. John F. Forbes

"If you're ignorant ,you can always learn; but if you're stupid,it's permanent."
By Jerry Guild
If you've ever been "taken for a ride, got gyped, scammed,or taken ;and who hasn't, this is an excellent book for you.If you have avoided these scam artists so far,you must have a pretty good head on your shoulders. However, that's no reason to let your guard down;because the world is filled with unsavory characters who are working their butts of trying to "hook" you.If you think these scammers are something from the past like Medicine Men in travelling sideshows,or flamboyant used car salesmen or characters like W.C Fields, and that the Government has thousands on staff to entrap them;you are in for a big surprise. All you have to do is recall Madoff and how he took Billions from "sophisicated investors",right under the noses of regulatory bodies and so called experts.
The only difference between the old days and today is that there are much more complicated methods and systems available to scam you.Without doubt, the Internet has offered scammers opportunities they would not even have dreamed of in the past. Also, while government regulations and employees have expanded unimaginably ,you are more liable to get gyped today than ever before.
This book covers the many kinds of scams that exist and gives all kinds of suggestions on how to protect yourself;but the best protection you can have is to beware of anyone you deal with and as a starter assume those who approach you in any way where money is involved;is to assume they are dishonest;especially if they are unknown to you.
As a starter, never deal with anyone who comes a knocking at your door.Never deal with anyone on a phone trying to sell you something;and above all never deal with anyone who contacts you by e-mail---and that includes banks, financial institutions, travel agencies, real estate salesmen,or government organizations, etc. Another way to protect yourself is to never give a deposit on anything.Get the goods before "coughing up" anything.Remember, anyone you are doing business probably has more money than you,so why should be the one taking the chance? If they won't do business without you first coming up with a deposit;say fine,I'll find someone else who will--Good Day!!
Above all, don't even think that you might be missing out on a prize or "deal";the chances of winning the lottery are much greater.
The book is filled with ways people are being scammed, and there are lots of suggestions on how to avoid them;but the best protection you can have is to be wary of anyone who approaches you with a "deal too good to to be true";or a "once in a lifetime opportunity".

Creativity, Inc.: Overcoming the Unseen Forces That Stand in the Way of True Inspiration, by Ed Catmull, Amy Wallace

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER |NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BYThe Huffington Post •Financial Times •Success • Inc. • Library Journal

From Ed Catmull, co-founder (with Steve Jobs and John Lasseter) of Pixar Animation Studios, the Academy Award–winning studio behind Inside Out and Toy Story, comes an incisive book about creativity in business and leadership—sure to appeal to readers of Daniel Pink, Tom Peters, and Chip and Dan Heath. Fast Company raves that Creativity, Inc. “just might be the most thoughtful management book ever.”

Creativity, Inc. is a book for managers who want to lead their employees to new heights, a manual for anyone who strives for originality, and the first-ever, all-access trip into the nerve center of Pixar Animation—into the meetings, postmortems, and “Braintrust” sessions where some of the most successful films in history are made. It is, at heart, a book about how to build a creative culture—but it is also, as Pixar co-founder and president Ed Catmull writes, “an expression of the ideas that I believe make the best in us possible.”

For nearly twenty years, Pixar has dominated the world of animation, producing such beloved films as the Toy Story trilogy, Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Up,WALL-E, and Inside Out,which have gone on to set box-office records and garner thirty Academy Awards. The joyousness of the storytelling, the inventive plots, the emotional authenticity: In some ways, Pixar movies are an object lesson in what creativity really is. Here, in this book, Catmull reveals the ideals and techniques that have made Pixar so widely admired—and so profitable.

As a young man, Ed Catmull had a dream: to make the first computer-animated movie. He nurtured that dream as a Ph.D. student at the University of Utah, where many computer science pioneers got their start, and then forged a partnership with George Lucas that led, indirectly, to his founding Pixar with Steve Jobs and John Lasseter in 1986. Nine years later, Toy Story was released, changing animation forever. The essential ingredient in that movie’s success—and in the thirteen movies that followed—was the unique environment that Catmull and his colleagues built at Pixar, based on leadership and management philosophies that protect the creative process and defy convention, such as:

• Give a good idea to a mediocre team, and they will screw it up. But give a mediocre idea to a great team, and they will either fix it or come up with something better.
• If you don’t strive to uncover what is unseen and understand its nature, you will be ill prepared to lead.
• It’s not the manager’s job to prevent risks. It’s the manager’s job to make it safe for others to take them.
• The cost of preventing errors is often far greater than the cost of fixing them.
• A company’s communication structure should not mirror its organizational structure. Everybody should be able to talk to anybody.

Praise for Creativity, Inc.

“Over more than thirty years, EdCatmull has developed methods to root out and destroy the barriers to creativity, to marry creativity to the pursuit of excellence, and, most impressive, to sustain a culture of disciplined creativity during setbacks and success.”—Jim Collins, co-author of Built to Last and author of Good to Great

“Too often, we seek to keep the status quo working. This is a book about breaking it.”—Seth Godin

Review
“Just might be the best business book ever written.”—Forbes

“Achieving enormous success while holding fast to the highest artistic standards is a nice trick—and Pixar, with its creative leadership and persistent commitment to innovation, has pulled it off. This book should be required reading for any manager.”—Charles Duhigg, author ofThe Power of Habit

“Steve Jobs—not a man inclined to hyperbole when asked about the qualities of others—once described Ed Catmull as ‘very wise,’ ‘very self-aware,’ ‘really thoughtful,’ ‘really, really smart,’ and possessing ‘quiet strength,’ all in a single interview. Any reader of Creativity, Inc., Catmull’s new book on the art of running creative companies, will have to agree. Catmull, president of both Pixar and Walt Disney Animation, has written what just might be the most thoughtful management book ever.”—Fast Company

“It’s one thing to be creative; it’s entirely another—and much more rare—to build a great and creative culture. Over more than thirty years, Ed Catmull has developed methods to root out and destroy the barriers to creativity, to marry creativity to the pursuit of excellence, and, most impressive, to sustain a culture of disciplined creativity during setbacks and success. Pixar’s unrivaled record, and the joy its films have added to our lives, gives his method the most important validation: It works.”—Jim Collins, co-author ofBuilt to Lastand author ofGood to Great

“Too often, we seek to keep the status quo working. This is a book about breaking it.”—Seth Godin

“What is the secret to making more of the good stuff? Every so often Hollywood embraces a book that it senses might provide the answer. . . . Catmull’s book is quickly becoming the latest bible for the show business crowd.”—The New York Times

“The most practical and deep book ever written by a practitioner on the topic of innovation.”—Prof. Gary P. Pisano, Harvard Business School

“Business gurus love to tell stories about Pixar, but this is our first chance to hear the real story from someone who lived it and led it. Everyone interested in managing innovation—or just good managing—needs to read this book.”—Chip Heath, co-author ofSwitchandDecisive

“A fascinating story about how some very smart people built something that profoundly changed the animation business and, along the way, popular culture . . . [Creativity, Inc.] is a well-told tale, full of detail about an interesting, intricate business. For fans of Pixar films, it’s a must-read. For fans of management books, it belongs on the ‘value added’ shelf.”—The Wall Street Journal

“Pixar uses technology only as a means to an end; its films are rooted in human concerns, not computer wizardry. The same can be said of Creativity Inc., Ed Catmull’s endearingly thoughtful explanation of how the studio he co-founded generated hits such as the Toy Story trilogy, Up and Wall-E. . . . [Catmull] uses Pixar’s triumphs and near-disasters to outline a system for managing people in creative businesses—one in which candid criticism is delivered sensitively, while individuality and autonomy are not strangled by a robotic corporate culture.”—Financial Times

“A wonderful new book . . . Unlike most books written by founders, this isn’t some myth-heavy legacy project—it’s far closer to a blueprint. Catmull takes us inside the Pixar ecosystem and shows how they build and refine excellence, in revelatory detail. . . . If you do creative work, you should read it, now.”—Daniel Coyle, author of The Talent Code

“A superb debut intended for managers in all fields of endeavor . . . He takes readers inside candid discussions and retreats at which participants, assuming the early versions of movies are bad, explore ways to improve them. Unusually rich in ideas, insights and experiences, the book celebrates the benefits of an open, nurturing work environment. An immensely readable and rewarding book that will challenge and inspire readers to make their workplaces hotbeds of creativity.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“Punctuated with surprising tales of how the company’s films were developed and the company’s financial struggles, Catmull shares insights about harnessing talent, creating teams, protecting the creative process, candid communications, organizational structures, alignment, and the importance of storytelling. . . . [Creativity, Inc.] will delight and inspire creative individuals and their managers, as well as anyone who wants to work ‘in an environment that fosters creativity and problem solving.’”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“For anyone managing anything, and particularly those trying to manage creative teams, Catmull is like a kind, smart godfather guiding us toward managing wisely, without losing our souls, and in a way that works toward greatness. Perhaps it’s all Up from there.”—The Christian Science Monitor

“Many have attempted to formulate and categorize inspiration and creativity. What Ed Catmull shares instead is his astute experience that creativity isn’t strictly a well of ideas, but an alchemy of people. In Creativity, Inc. Ed reveals, with commonsense specificity and honesty, examples of how not to get in your own way and how to realize a creative coalescence of art, business, and innovation.”—George Lucas

“This is the best book ever written on what it takes to build a creative organization. It is the best because Catmull’s wisdom, modesty, and self-awareness fill every page. He shows how Pixar’s greatness results from connecting the specific little things they do (mostly things that anyone can do in any organization) to the big goal that drives everyone in the company: making films that make them feel proud of one another.”—Robert I. Sutton, Stanford professor and author of The No A**hole Rule and co-author of Scaling Up Excellence

Chapter 1

Animated

For thirteen years we had a table in the large conference room at Pixar that we call West One. Though it was beautiful, I grew to hate this table. It was long and skinny, like one of those things you’d see in a comedy sketch about an old wealthy couple that sits down for dinner—one person at either end, a candelabra in the middle—and has to shout to make conversation. The table had been chosen by a designer Steve Jobs liked, and it was elegant, all right—but it impeded our work.

We’d hold regular meetings about our movies around that table—thirty of us facing off in two long lines, often with more people seated along the walls—and everyone was so spread out that it was difficult to communicate. For those unlucky enough to be seated at the far ends, ideas didn’t flow because it was nearly impossible to make eye contact without craning your neck. Moreover, because it was important that the director and producer of the film in question be able to hear what everyone was saying, they had to be placed at the center of the table. So did Pixar’s creative leaders: John Lasseter, Pixar’s creative officer, and me, and a handful of our most experienced directors, producers, and writers. To ensure that these people were always seated together, someone began making place cards. We might as well have been at a formal dinner party.

When it comes to creative inspiration, job titles and hierarchy are meaningless. That’s what I believe. But unwittingly, we were allowing this table—and the resulting place card ritual—to send a different message. The closer you were seated to the middle of the table, it implied, the more important—the more central—you must be. And the farther away, the less likely you were to speak up—your distance from the heart of the conversation made participating feel intrusive. If the table was crowded, as it often was, still more people would sit in chairs around the edges of the room, creating yet a third tier of participants (those at the center of the table, those at the ends, and those not at the table at all). Without intending to, we’d created an obstacle that discouraged people from jumping in.

Over the course of a decade, we held countless meetings around this table in this way—completely unaware of how doing so undermined our own core principles. Why were we blind to this? Because the seating arrangements and place cards were designed for the convenience of the leaders, including me. Sincerely believing that we were in an inclusive meeting, we saw nothing amiss because we didn’t feel excluded. Those not sitting at the center of the table, meanwhile, saw quite clearly how it established a pecking order but presumed that we—the leaders—had intended that outcome. Who were they, then, to complain?

It wasn’t until we happened to have a meeting in a smaller room with a square table that John and I realized what was wrong. Sitting around that table, the interplay was better, the exchange of ideas more free-flowing, the eye contact automatic. Every person there, no matter their job title, felt free to speak up. This was not only what we wanted, it was a fundamental Pixar belief: Unhindered communication was key, no matter what your position. At our long, skinny table, comfortable in our middle seats, we had utterly failed to recognize that we were behaving contrary to that basic tenet. Over time, we’d fallen into a trap. Even though we were conscious that a room’s dynamics are critical to any good discussion, even though we believed that we were constantly on the lookout for problems, our vantage point blinded us to what was right before our eyes.

Emboldened by this new insight, I went to our facilities department. “Please,” I said, “I don’t care how you do it, but get that table out of there.” I wanted something that could be arranged into a more intimate square, so people could address each other directly and not feel like they didn’t matter. A few days later, as a critical meeting on an upcoming movie approached, our new table was installed, solving the problem.

Still, interestingly, there were remnants of that problem that did not immediately vanish just because we’d solved it. For example, the next time I walked into West One, I saw the brand-new table, arranged—as requested—in a more intimate square that made it possible for more people to interact at once. But the table was adorned with the same old place cards! While we’d fixed the key problem that had made place cards seem necessary, the cards themselves had become a tradition that would continue until we specifically dismantled it. This wasn’t as troubling an issue as the table itself, but it was something we had to address because cards implied hierarchy, and that was precisely what we were trying to avoid. When Andrew Stanton, one of our directors, entered the meeting room that morning, he grabbed several place cards and began randomly moving them around, narrating as he went. “We don’t need these anymore!” he said in a way that everyone in the room grasped. Only then did we succeed in eliminating this ancillary problem.

This is the nature of management. Decisions are made, usually for good reasons, which in turn prompt other decisions. So when problems arise—and they always do—disentangling them is not as simple as correcting the original error. Often, finding a solution is a multi-step endeavor. There is the problem you know you are trying to solve—think of that as an oak tree—and then there are all the other problems—think of these as saplings—that sprouted from the acorns that fell around it. And these problems remain after you cut the oak tree down.

Even after all these years, I’m often surprised to find problems that have existed right in front of me, in plain sight. For me, the key to solving these problems is finding ways to see what’s working and what isn’t, which sounds a lot simpler than it is. Pixar today is managed according to this principle, but in a way I’ve been searching all my life for better ways of seeing. It began decades before Pixar even existed.

When I was a kid, I used to plunk myself down on the living room floor of my family’s modest Salt Lake City home a few minutes before 7 p.m. every Sunday and wait for Walt Disney. Specifically, I’d wait for him to appear on our black-and-white RCA with its tiny 12-inch screen. Even from a dozen feet away—the accepted wisdom at the time was that viewers should put one foot between them and the TV for every inch of screen—I was transfixed by what I saw.

Each week, Walt Disney himself opened the broadcast of The Wonderful World of Disney. Standing before me in suit and tie, like a kindly neighbor, he would demystify the Disney magic. He’d explain the use of synchronized sound in Steamboat Willie or talk about the importance of music in Fantasia. He always went out of his way to give credit to his forebears, the men—and, at this point, they were all men—who’d done the pioneering work upon which he was building his empire. He’d introduce the television audience to trailblazers such as Max Fleischer, of Koko the Clown and Betty Boop fame, and Winsor McCay, who made Gertie the Dinosaur—the first animated film to feature a character that expressed emotion—in 1914. He’d gather a group of his animators, colorists, and storyboard artists to explain how they made Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck come to life. Each week, Disney created a made-up world, used cutting-edge technology to enable it, and then told us how he’d done it.

Walt Disney was one of my two boyhood idols. The other was Albert Einstein. To me, even at a young age, they represented the two poles of creativity. Disney was all about inventing the new. He brought things into being—both artistically and technologically—that did not exist before. Einstein, by contrast, was a master of explaining that which already was. I read every Einstein biography I could get my hands on as well as a little book he wrote on his theory of relativity. I loved how the concepts he developed forced people to change their approach to physics and matter, to view the universe from a different perspective. Wild-haired and iconic, Einstein dared to bend the implications of what we thought we knew. He solved the biggest puzzles of all and, in doing so, changed our understanding of reality.

Both Einstein and Disney inspired me, but Disney affected me more because of his weekly visits to my family’s living room. “When you wish upon a star, makes no difference who you are,” his TV show’s theme song would announce as a baritone-voiced narrator promised: “Each week, as you enter this timeless land, one of these many worlds will open to you . . . .” Then the narrator would tick them off: Frontierland (“tall tales and true from the legendary past”), Tomorrowland (“the promise of things to come”), Adventureland (“the wonder world of nature’s own realm”), and Fantasyland (“the happiest kingdom of them all”). I loved the idea that animation could take me places I’d never been. But the land I most wanted to learn about was the one occupied by the innovators at Disney who made these animated films.

Between 1950 and 1955, Disney made three movies we consider classics today: Cinderella, Peter Pan, and Lady and the Tramp. More than half a century later, we all remember the glass slipper, the Island of Lost Boys, and that scene where the cocker spaniel and the mutt slurp spaghetti. But few grasp how technically sophisticated these movies were. Disney’s animators were at the forefront of applied technology; instead of merely using existing methods, they were inventing ones of their own. They had to develop the tools to perfect sound and color, to use blue screen matting and multi-plane cameras and xerography. Every time some technological breakthrough occurred, Walt Disney incorporated it and then talked about it on his show in a way that highlighted the relationship between technology and art. I was too young to realize such a synergy was groundbreaking. To me, it just made sense that they belonged together.

Watching Disney one Sunday evening in April of 1956, I experienced something that would define my professional life. What exactly it was is difficult to describe except to say that I felt something fall into place inside my head. That night’s episode was called “Where Do the Stories Come From?” and Disney kicked it off by praising his animators’ knack for turning everyday occurrences into cartoons. That night, though, it wasn’t Disney’s explanation that pulled me in but what was happening on the screen as he spoke. An artist was drawing Donald Duck, giving him a jaunty costume and a bouquet of flowers and a box of candy with which to woo Daisy. Then, as the artist’s pencil moved around the page, Donald came to life, putting up his dukes to square off with the pencil lead, then raising his chin to allow the artist to give him a bow tie.

The definition of superb animation is that each character on the screen makes you believe it is a thinking being. Whether it’s a T-Rex or a slinky dog or a desk lamp, if viewers sense not just movement but intention—or, put another way, emotion—then the animator has done his or her job. It’s not just lines on paper anymore; it’s a living, feeling entity. This is what I experienced that night, for the first time, as I watched Donald leap off the page. The transformation from a static line drawing to a fully dimensional, animated image was sleight of hand, nothing more, but the mystery of how it was done—not just the technical process but the way the art was imbued with such emotion—was the most interesting problem I’d ever considered. I wanted to climb through the TV screen and be part of this world.

The mid-1950s and early 1960s were, of course, a time of great prosperity and industry in the United States. Growing up in Utah in a tight-knit Mormon community, my four younger brothers and sisters and I felt that anything was possible. Because the adults we knew had all lived through the Depression, World War II, and then the Korean War, this period felt to them like the calm after a thunderstorm.

I remember the optimistic energy—an eagerness to move forward that was enabled and supported by a wealth of emerging technologies. It was boom time in America, with manufacturing and home construction at an all-time high. Banks were offering loans and credit, which meant more and more people could own a new TV, house, or Cadillac. There were amazing new appliances like disposals that ate your garbage and machines that washed your dishes, although I certainly did my share of cleaning them by hand. The first organ transplants were performed in 1954; the first polio vaccine came a year later; in 1956, the term artificial intelligence entered the lexicon. The future, it seemed, was already here.

Then, when I was twelve, the Soviets launched the first artificial satellite—Sputnik 1—into earth’s orbit. This was huge news, not just in the scientific and political realms but in my sixth grade classroom at school, where the morning routine was interrupted by a visit from the principal, whose grim expression told us that our lives had changed forever. Since we’d been taught that the Communists were the enemy and that nuclear war could be waged at the touch of a button, the fact that they’d beaten us into space seemed pretty scary—proof that they had the upper hand.

The United States government’s response to being bested was to create something called ARPA, or the Advanced Research Projects Agency. Though it was housed within the Defense Department, its mission was ostensibly peaceful: to support scientific researchers in America’s universities in the hopes of preventing what it termed “technological surprise.” By sponsoring our best minds, the architects of ARPA believed, we’d come up with better answers. Looking back, I still admire that enlightened reaction to a serious threat: We’ll just have to get smarter. ARPA would have a profound effect on America, leading directly to the computer revolution and the Internet, among countless other innovations. There was a sense that big things were happening in America, with much more to come. Life was full of possibility.

Still, while my family was middle-class, our outlook was shaped by my father’s upbringing. Not that he talked about it much. Earl Catmull, the son of an Idaho dirt farmer, was one of fourteen kids, five of whom had died as infants. His mother, raised by Mormon pioneers who made a meager living panning for gold in the Snake River in Idaho, didn’t attend school until she was 11. My father was the first in his family ever to go to college, paying his own way by working several jobs. During my childhood, he taught math during the school year and built houses during the summers. He built our house from the ground up. While he never explicitly said that education was paramount, my siblings and I all knew we were expected to study hard and go to college.

Ed is my hero.
By Craig Good
This is a biased review. Ed is my hero, and has been for a good thirty years. I'm one of the people in that 1985 photo near the end of the book.

This book is just like Ed: Brilliant, quotable, succinct, and humble. There are few people in this world as smart as Ed, fewer who seem to lack any ego, and a vanishingly small number who are both. In fact, Ed"s the only one I've met. Even though I was for years the low man on the totem pole, Ed never treated me differently than the highest status dignitaries who visited Pixar.

For years when I showed guests around Pixar or spoke of its culture I maintained that everything good about it, and the fact that art and technology are words that unite people rather than divide them is all due to Ed. With this book I get a big, fat I Told You So.

I recommend this book to anybody who is starting, running, managing, or working at a company; to anybody working in, studying, or interested in any creative pursuit; to fans of Pixar or Disney; and to anybody who likes a well-written book by a damn interesting guy. And you will not find a more intimate and clear-eyed assessment of Steve Jobs anywhere.

Ed"s wife told me once that he reads math books on vacation to relax. Nobody else could write a book on management that cites both Zen and stochastic self-similarity.

Strong introduction to creative management
By V. Vanderbent
While others have abundantly lauded Ed Catmull's writing and I would wholeheartedly do the same, there appear to be a few shortcomings in this text that has been praised as a "'ultimate' guide to managing creative talent." Having worked in both creative and non-creative fields myself, I recognize a whole lot of Ed's experiences when it comes to dealing with personalities. There is a side to "personality" that often seems to get less credit than it deserves imho - and that is the ability to recover from shortsighted behavior and make justified, reasonable amends. No matter how many psychological profiles and type tests people do to create the perfect team, more often than not they end up working together based on skillset and chance encounters - being available at the right place, at the right time. There are certain highly driven personalities that wouldn't give anyone a chance of confronting them in an amicable fashion during the production stages of a project - even though we can see this type A personality ruining big budget productions, careers and lives. Creativity, Inc. gives a very definite, broad introduction of what to expect from a management perspective in a creative setting, especially in terms of feature motion picture production. Still, there is so much more to constructively preventing project disasters and unnecessary team discord that this book doesn't even begin to touch. Somehow I expected much more.

When Ed tells a story, it's in your best interest to listen.
By Shelby Cass
In my 18 years of knowing Ed, 6 of which I had the pleasure of working at Pixar, I have yet to meet someone who is so genuine, so brilliant, and so quiet. Quiet, that is, until he has something to say.

Ed doesn't speak unless he's given something much thought, and if/when you are lucky enough to receive an opinion or a bit of advice from him, grab it, and hold on.

With this book, Ed Catmull has given the world an amazing gift. Much more than a book for managers, it contains wisdom and stories that you will carry into the rest of your life.

'Creativity, Inc.' is thoughtful, sage, humorous, and 1000% true. There is no one else who could have written this book with such candor--and you will learn about true candor and it's absolute necessity in the creative process. You will learn about the kind of blood, sweat, and tears that drive a process, and the kind that can destroy it. You will read stories no one at Pixar would have dared to tell in such an open forum, and you will learn from them. Ed has presented them in perfect context with great analogies and sometimes humbling but always educational conclusions. He is, it turns out, a gifted storyteller and teacher to boot.

Well worth the read, be sure to keep it around--you'll tell other people to read it. Maybe get an extra copy. Don't want to lose yours.
