Exquisite

After hearing about the controversy over David Hamilton's subject matter, I decided to purchase this book. I was a little nervous about owning this, not desiring to be a 'felon' or incurring the wrath of Big (overbearing) Brother.
When I opened the cover and turned the pages, my nervousness changed into respect. I find it ludicrous that such a book could in any way be considered "pornographic", let alone be considered to contain child pornography.
As an artist, I believe Mr. Hamilton has captured what he perceives to be the beauty in this world. He certainly shares it with a passion evidenced through his work. Whether it is the young nudes, stills, or landscapes, Mr. Hamilton presents his passions in a positive, tasteful manner. I am starting to believe that those who find fault with his art work need to re-evaluate their position. That is my, entitled, opinion, as those who find fault are entitled to theirs.
Thanks to Amazon.com for offering such a wonderful work of art, akin, in my mind, to the work of Ansel Adams, at an extremely attractive price. I will purchase other titles by David Hamilton. If you like photographic art, I would highly recommend this book.

Interesting Collection of his Work

The book has photos spanning David Hamilton's career as well as a bit of an auto-biographical essay of his life and how he got into photographing beautiful young models.
The pictures include nude models as well as subjects like flowers, landscapes, and personal photos.
My complaints about the book is that the pictures are usually too small to be appreciated and the quality of the post-production is not top class. Though there are many nice photos, it does not justify the work of the photographer.
Nonetheless Hamilton's books are hard to find and always go out of print. Overall, it is worth buying.

The first time I saw something from David Hamilton I was 14 years old. Since then there was always a feeling inside of me, which wants to capture the moment between innocence and adulthood. I still remember that moment, where I wasn't sure if I am a kid anymore or an adult. David Hamilton captures that moments brilliant. He takes pictures of dreams -- Dreams that are reality. Every picture he takes he takes with his heart. He knows how to capture the moments of real life.

Great Book - LOVE IT!

Great swipe...

I actually bought this book as an upsell to Bill Glazers excellent book "Outragoeus Marketing" with no expectations either way. Drayton Bird obviously has an excellent reputation so I thought I would have a look. Thankfully, the book proved to better (in my opinion anyway) than Bill Glazer's. I'm at that point now where I have basically read and heard everything there is about copywriting, but this truly was a well written piece of work from a master of the written word. The best thing though, is the letters Drayton provides as examples. These "swipes" are worth 10 x the cost of the book alone. I would say though that to the lay marketer, don't expect anything on long copy sales letters. The sales letters in this book are more so the simple 4 pagers used to sell/prospect for people's products and services, not the long 16 pagers or magalogue style packages many are familiar with for selling information products and supplements. This is a particularly excellent resource if you own or manage a business and are looking at ways to prospect more leads and customers through direct mail. A must read for professional copywriters and business owners at any level!

First rate book on direct mail letters - especially for house lists

This book is not about writing internet letters, emails, or
space ads. It is one of the few books I've read which
is exclusively concerned with direct mail sales letters.

Bird pays special attention to subtleties of the writing
process, of getting the tone and writing voice right. He
admits to being neurotic about his own writing skills, which
is charming because he's without a doubt one of the top
direct marketing guys ever.

If you need to write letters to your existing customers this
could be the most valuable book you could get. If you need
to write online salesletters it won't provide much help
with critical issues like how to write headlines.

No book can cover it all. This is an excellent, specialized
tome on writing the kind of letters that come in an envelope,
perhaps with a brochure and order form. Bird mentions
Gary Halbert's contention that you'll get the best response
with plain-paper envelopes, but doesn't totally agree with
it. Some really good insights here for writing fund-raising
letters.

La Plante has created a most interesting character in Lorraine Page. I thought the first book, "Cold Shoulder", was the best, but I was still eager to read how she was coping with her problems. And the minor characters were well-delineated, too.

Neal (African American studies & English, SUNY, Albany; What the Music Said: Black Popular Music & Black Popular Culture) has written a provocative study of African American popular culture since the Black Power and Civil Rights era. Using his wide knowledge of popular culture and political events, he argues that the media's integration of blacks in the 1960s, with television shows like Julia and I Spy, was at best a partial bow. Introducing a new concept of "Post-Soul Aesthetic" to black cultural criticism, Neal thoughtfully asserts that contemporary black culture, especially rap and hip-hop music, provides a much more satisfying and varied, if often ambiguous and problematic, mirror of black values and models. His sources range from music to comic strips like Boondocks to comedians like Eddie Murphy. This is a very important work, marred only by a tendency to use too much postmodernist jargon, which will discourage general readers. Recommended for large academic libraries. A.O. Solid Book

Neal's Soul Babies is a good book on black music through a postmodern lens. A lot of the concepts he talks about are dense, but he does write in a compelling way, and the subject matter (ranging from Good Times to R Kelly) is interesting as well. If you want to approach black popular culture from an academic, intellectual way, then this is an excellent book. If you are looking for a coffee table book with pictures, this ain't the book.

It's A Dirty Shame to Condemn Them.

These interracial children will never be accepted by the whites or the blacks as belonging to their race; they will always be misfits as kids and as adults. It wasn't meant to be in God's plan for this world. Who Takes The Blame? August 13, 2006

In February, 1969, a study titled "Black-White Contact in Schools: Its Social and Academic Effects" was published by Purdue University sociologist Martin Patchen. In it, he concludes "Available evidence indicates that interracial contact in schools does not have consistent positive effects on students' racial attitudes and behavior or on the academic prformance of minority students." In March, it was declared that the AIDS virus started in Africa and on the Caribbean island, Haita and spread to the United States via tourists. Get this! Susan Sontag decided in 1988 that "the virus was sent to Africa from the U.S. as an act of bacteriological warfare" as a conspiracy.

July, 1985, a survey conducted in New York City using the HIV antibody test finds that of frequent drug users, 87 percent carried the infection. The majority of the addicts were black and Hispanic. In August 1988, on Zachary's birthday, Jean-Michael Basquiat died in New York village of a heroin overdose at the age of 27 (Zach was 26 then). He was a graffiti artist whose pieces sold for $50,000 at the time of his death. There was a lot of debate about his artistic worth.

This book traverses the years 1979 to 1989 in America and is mostly about the singers and groups in the entertainment area but also writers which proliferated during that time. It is the time of affirmative action and Clarence Thomas who was married to a Causcasian woman but courted the office girls and almost lost his nomination. I watched it all on t.v. The girl took all the blame, and she was honest and above-board, blameless. The results of overcompensation has caused much turmoil for us all in America and some are deceitful by trying to pull the wool ober the eyes of political figures to the detriment of everybody.

Interesting look at depression from one of my favorite Puritan writers.

What a great look at 17th century Puritan thought on the very modern problem of depression. I think he is right about what are the chief causes and how a Christian should seek to be cured of depression. The last section gets a bit off when he starts talking about different organs being the source of a medical depression, but it was still fun to read about their thoughts on how the body effects the soul.

The book tells you the methodology of programming through unit testing. It guides you to how to simulate network servers so that it can be unit tested even without the link to actual servers. I would have prefered that the testing method for Coredata be there.

So far so good

So I literally just started reading and practicing the book. I have no prior experience with TDD... I am doing Xcode 8 & Swift 3, but the syntax isn't much different still doable, although there is Swift 3 version coming out.

So far the Red, Green, refactor approach (from the first chapter) has change my whole thought process about what TDD is. He is literally walking you step by step.

I have some problem with downloading the code. Wish it was made easier. The lack of code color is unpleasing to me

It all makes sense now.

I have always had trouble of understanding TDD. I know that tests are an important tool to creating clean code that works well but its hard to know what to test and how to go about it especially with view controllers, storyboards, network layers and everything else that goes into iOS development. This book addressed all those issues as well as some new features that swift offers. I really enjoyed his examples, everything was clear and I didn't have any unanswered questions by the end of the book. The author is a nice guy that is responsive on twitter as well. Definetly a must read for any iOS developer wanting to improve their skills.
