A fantasy of history and the imagination

Do you remember climbing trees, as a child? When I was a child, our neighborhood was full of giant elms that grew into a massive arch that turned our street into a leafy tunnel. I'd climb up on the lower branches, and dream about being brave enough to climb to the very top of the tree.I imagined building tree houses, where my friends I I could camp out high in the trees, our own special places where grownups were not allowed.

Italo Calvino imagines Cosimo, a boy from a family of minor nobles of the late 18th Century who one day takes to the trees in an act of rebellion against his family, vowing never to set foot on the Earth again. He keeps his promise, traveling to foreign lands, falling in love, corresponding with Voltaire and Diderot and other great minds of his day, participating in the intellectual and the revolutionary movements. Cosimo's younger brother narrates the story of how the young baron took to the trees, and what became of him.

Italo Calvino uses his gifts in storytelling and description to create a world in which a preposterous notion becomes commonplace. The most preposterous characters and events can seem ordinary as Calvino describes them. Cosimo's mother, a German woman known as "the Generalessa," spend her time doing embroidery, but not of the sort you'd expect. "The lace and embroidery were usually in the designs of geographical maps; our mother would stretch them over cushions or tapestry and stick in pins and tiny flags, showing the disposition of battles in the Wars of Succession, which she knew by heart..."

There is also Battista, the sister of Cosimo and our narrator, "a kind of stay at home nun," confined to the castle after a questionable encounter with a young noble, who dresses in a nun's wimple and takes her revenge on the family by preparing exquisite yet inedible dishes. Cosimo's uncle (the illegitimate brother of the Duke) dresses in Turkish robes and a fez and busies himself looking after the legal affair of the family and making complex plans for canals and hydraulic systems that will never be built. Next door is a family with whom Cosimo's family has been feuding, and they have a young daughter- but beyond that you'll have to read the book for yourself.

This is Calvino at his best, the teller of fabulous tales and a crafter of exquisite sentences who can catapult the reader far up into the trees, and beyond.

A parable disquised as an intellecual exercise, or is it?

Never underestimate Italo Calvino, for what you think you are reading may turn out to be something else entirely from your original impressions. That is the case with the relatively short novel, The Baron in the Trees. It is true that I found it enchanting in the beginning and several chapters captured that enchantment, but there are sections that seem totally irrelevant to the plot and by the time I finished the book, I realized it really had no plot. It is an intellectual exercise disguised as a parable. Or is it a long parable disguised as an intellectual exercise? It offers an alternative reality based on our historic reality. Calvino takes an illogical premise that a young man decides at age 12 to life the rest of his life in the trees, and then constructs a world of detail around that premise, thus keeping the reader in a state of suspension. The narrator is the younger brother to the Baron who observes and relates to us what he sees, what he interprets, and sometimes the inner motivations of the other characters. It is the love affair between Cosimo, the Baron in the trees, and Viola, his childhood girlfriend and adult lover that is the peak or climax of the story for all energy and action leads to this point and the recedes from their affair. Despite the young narrator observations and interpretations, the Baron remained a mystery for me and I finally came to the conclusion that he is the ultimate outsider, the one who sees all human society and social constructions from a philosophical distance. Yet, it is passion an love for Viola that causes Cosimo to lose the perspective of the outsider and to be bound in his passions and desires. The character of Viola is fascinating for as a child she pits boy against boy and as a woman she pits man against man. Yet Calvino has a fascinating interpretation of why she uses jealous against the man she loves most in her life. Enough said, for this is a critical part of the book I don't want to spoil for other readers. It is a long parable about choosing to be an outsider, to look at the reset of humanity from a distance, and yet to be bound by the human passions that bound all of us. It is a long parable because there is much in human existence to explore. About every five pages Calvino offers a charming and sometimes enchanting comment or observation or description that reveals him to be the master of irony and abstraction. If you are ready for an author to play games with your expectations, read it.

About the Author
Colin Renfrew is Disney Professor Emeritus of Archaeology and former Director of the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research at the University of Cambridge. He is the author and editor of many books, including Before Civilization, Archaeology and Language, and Prehistory and coeditor (with Paul Bahn) of The Cambridge World Prehistory. He is a fellow of the British Academy and a life peer in the House of Lords.

Boring and Professorial, Bad Layout for Kindle Readers

This book has wonderful photos, but the writing is the most boring and professorial that you'll ever see outside of a classroom. Is the author trying to BORE people away from entering the field? Old and new techniques of discovery and analysis are competently described and beautifully illustrated, but I don't think anyone interested in archaeology should read this book unless it's to cure insomnia. NOTE: The book is poorly laid out for Kindle on an iPad. You have to enlarge each page to read the text, then scroll back to view the pictures. Constant enlarging and scrolling contribute greatly to reader annoyance.

About the Author

Tom P. Ashe, the Associate Chair of the Masters of Professional Studies in Digital Photography at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, is an internationally recognized educator and consultant in digital photography and color management. He received his Bachelor of Science in Photography from the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY, and his Masters of Applied Science in Photography from RMIT University (formerly Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology) in Melbourne, Australia. Tom’s background as a photographer, fine art digital printmaker, and product development specialist for Eastman Kodak, Monaco Systems, and Polaroid, gives him a unique understanding of the aesthetic and technical issues in digital photography today.

Series Editor Katrin Eismann is the Chair of the Masters of Professional Studies in Digital Photography at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Known as the Photoshop Diva, Katrin is an internationally respected artist, teacher, and author. More Than Most Photographers Need

Color Management is the process by which the colors of image outputs are adjusted so that they all look the same. For example it is the process by which the colors of a print are made to look the same as those of a monitor. Due to the nature of the various outputs, the colors are rarely the same but can be adjusted closely enough to satisfy the photographer. As a wildlife photographer, I achieve this just by calibrating my monitor and using print profiles from the manufacturers whose papers I print on. I know an artist who complains that the difference in colors between my monitor and prints is so far apart as to be different images. To satisfy the "close enough" requirements of different users a variety of tools are available that can allow for more precision in color management. (The idea of "close enough" is mine, not the author's.)

All of that is by way of explaining why "Color Management & Quality Output" may provide more information than many photographers want or need.

After describing the nature of color in photographs, the book explains how to calibrate a monitor, and then how to profile scanners and digital cameras (although, with exceptions, the author is not a strong proponent of camera profiling). There is a brief review of how to adjust color in both Photoshop and Lightroom and then the author turns to output profiles with an emphasis on creating custom profiles, although he acknowledges a place for generic profiles. Ashe then explains how to further adjust profiles to make them even more accurate as well as use other color utilities. He visits raster image processors (RIPs) and explains their usefulness for some photographers. The second half of the book deals with printmaking, including not just inkjet printing but also the use of outside labs, printing presses, and short-run photo books. There is an exploration of color management in the rest of the Adobe Creative Cloud, as well as outputting to the Web and tablets. The author finishes by discussing longevity and finishing.

The book is well written and understandable. Not every piece of software and tool is described in detail, but enough information is given to understand the principles. Even if not covered in detail, the manufacturer's instructions provide the nuts and bolts information to do a good job.

One of the things that the author reveals is that going beyond profiling one's monitor and using a paper manufacturer's profile is a costly and time consuming process that may not be worthwhile for many photographers for whom this basic color management may be "close enough".

There are a few tricks of color management that are not mentioned like creating a duplicate image for soft proofing (the process of adjusting the image on screen so that it looks like the printed output) for comparison purposes and to allow adjusting the image to overcome changes like reduced gamut.

Most photographers will probably get all they need to know about color management from a good book on printing. But for those who need the utmost of precision in the colors they output, this is an excellent reference.

Great book - skip the kindle, buy the book

It's great to see another book out on Color Management and the info is well presented. I made a mistake in buying the kindle version - most illustrations and diagrams are so small and compressed that you can't read them (enlarging them just brought up blurry images)! I've tested it on my Kindle FireHD and Kindle Reader for Mac with the same result. If you are thinking of buying - get the actual book!

They gave me full personal credit for every Soviet victory. My rent was mid for a week ahead. Yet I left the house that night without a word of final farewell. I merely said that if my trip should keep me out of town beyond Tuesday, they had my permission to let the room. I wanted my hosts to be honestly ignorant of my whereabouts and of my intention not to return, should there be any inquiries from the Soviet Pur chasing Commission. For several days, at the Commission offices, I had simulated headaches and general indisposition. Casually 1 had remarked that morning to a few colleagues that I had better remain home for a rest that I might iiot come in on Monday. I was playing hard for an extra day of grace before my absence would be discovered.
