Swarm Intelligence: From Natural to Artificial Systems (Santa Fe Institute Studies on the Sciences of Complexity), by Eric Bonabeau, Guy T

Social insects--ants, bees, termites, and wasps--can be viewed as powerful problem-solving systems with sophisticated collective intelligence. Composed of simple interacting agents, this intelligence lies in the networks of interactions among individuals and between individuals and the environment. A fascinating subject, social insects are also a powerful metaphor for artificial intelligence, and the problems they solve--finding food, dividing labor among nestmates, building nests, responding to external challenges--have important counterparts in engineering and computer science.

This book provides a detailed look at models of social insect behavior and how to apply these models in the design of complex systems. The book shows how these models replace an emphasis on control, preprogramming, and centralization with designs featuring autonomy, emergence, and distributed functioning. These designs are proving immensely flexible and robust, able to adapt quickly to changing environments and to continue functioning even when individual elements fail. In particular, these designs are an exciting approach to the tremendous growth of complexity in software and information. Swarm Intelligence draws on up-to-date research from biology, neuroscience, artificial intelligence, robotics, operations research, and computer graphics, and each chapter is organized around a particular biological example, which is then used to develop an algorithm, a multiagent system, or a group of robots. The book will be an invaluable resource for a broad range of disciplines.

Review
" The book is full of new ideas, new concepts produced by research direction that is at a rather early stage ... The book sums up a new, fascinating way of devloping algorithms, multi-agent systems and robot swarms based on examples of maybe the most successful social systems found on earth. That makes it well worth reading" JASSS

A first milestone in the study of Swarm Intelligence
By Alcherio Martinoli
The book of Bonabeau, Dorigo, and Theraulaz is an excellent example of synergetic work between a physicist, an engineer, and a biologist. The Swarm Intelligence principles are first described and understood through models in natural systems and then translated in optimization algorithms, distributed algorithms for robotic control, and so on. Even if the book does not completely succeed in linking all three disciplines together - computer science, engineering, and biology - under a sound, common formalism, it represents an extremely up to date collection of work carried out worldwide in the field of Swarm Intelligence. I strongly believe in the future of this field and of its applications to problems hard to tackle with classical techniques. This book summarizes in an very equilibrated way the early, promising steps of Swarm Intelligence.

Impressively good, but not an introduction
By Steve Uhlig
Compared to "Swarm intelligence" by James Kennedy, this one is not introductive but gets quite deep into the working of applying the "swarm" paradigm to optimization problems. I would rather recommmend for a person not used to meta-heuristics and optimization to first go to the book by Kennedy. Only if one is interested in using swarm for solving real optimization problems reading this one is a good idea.
This book illustrates several features of swarm behavior that can be leveraged for optimization. The authors writing style is equivalent to technical papers, so be prepared...this is no easy book.

The Gorge is a story of the triumph of will and perseverance by four young girls of pre-history. Micaela is of the people, one of four young orphaned girls within the clan where all females are chattel. All four eagerly anticipate the annual winter migration and the opportunity to find a mate. But first, they must undergo a rite of passage. The Breeding is an ancient ceremony, vital to the continued existence of the clan. It is also the one time when young women have any semblance of worth. But The Breeding has unexpected and disastrous consequences, leaving the girls outcasts with few prospects and little chance of survival. Now they must stand together against a brutal environment, wild animals, a vicious tribe known as the Raiders, and their own society. No one expects them to succeed—except possibly for the enigmatic Others, who move quietly among the People, pursuing their own mysterious goals A deft exploration of the subjugation and exploitation of women in early civilizations, The Gorge recounts the adventures, trials, bravery, and sacrifice of four girls struggling to understand their place in a world that undervalues their skills, their dreams, and their abilities. Together, they will prove themselves the equals of any warriors, triumph over their enemies, and learn to defend themselves both morally and intellectually. With a little help from the Others, they might just change the world. The Gorge contains sexually explicit material.

Review
The Gorge is a satisfying, easy, fast-moving read. The characters are members of various groups forced to travel by weather and tradition. Some groups survive by aggression; some by wiliness; some by fleetness of foot. All are, by need, practical to the extreme in their own ways.
I recommend this book to anyone wanting an entertaining read about ancient life. There are several surprises along the way, and an ending that is the biggest surprise of all.

About the Author

What many call careers, Joe Zeigler calls interests. Beginning as a firefighter in Williamsburg, Virginia, Zeigler left to earn a degree in fire protection from Oklahoma State University, picking up a BA in business along the way.

Taking a job as a fire protection engineer with Kemper Insurance somehow led to a ten-year stint as a professional motorcycle racer.

In 1981, Zeigler founded the Penguin Road Racing School and wrote How to Fly, a how-to manual for motorcycle racers. Intrigued by the developing world of personal computers, he retired from racing to become a consultant for Digital Equipment Corporation.

Zeigler launched six computer stores and the nation’s first computer discount warehouse—only to lose them at the hands of an arsonist. He rebounded to write FirePrograms, a software package for fire departments and the world’s first low-priced UPS shipping manifest software. He sold both businesses to focus on his writing.

Joe is also a pilot and a cook with his own line of hot sauce and feels ill-defined by any single idiosyncrasy.

A look into the past that possibly formed our future.
By Robert L. McClellan
My first introduction to ancient life and experiences was through a movie called
“Quest for Fire”. There were clans of people who had not developed language yet, but
communicated through gestures and groans. Not one word was spoken in the movie. Their fire went out and the search for a replacement was their top goal. Their quest was for fire. Along the way, they learned to make it.

"The Gorge" picks up perhaps thousands of years later with the ability to communicate, reason, and pursue goals. The development of trade, fabrication of tools and barter to extend their ability to survive. Yet still primitive in comparison to the world we live in today.

I have traveled throughout the South West and enjoyed visiting cliff dwellings that inhabitants used to survive. The inhabitants left a long time ago, never to return. "The Gorge" helped me to comprehend the complexity of their existence and perhaps reasons for their final departure.

This delightful book is an incite on what life could have been like centuries ago. Some societies
traveled from one location to another for climate change. Some remained at one place year round.
Each had their own customs and evolved as they learned to co-operate with other clans. I
found myself fearing the “Raiders” yet appreciating them after getting to know that several members
had kindness, compassion and did the right thing. Even sparing a life when ordered to take it. An enjoyable read for me.

A satisfying, easy, fast-moving read
By David L
The Gorge is a satisfying, easy, fast-moving read. The characters are members of various groups forced to travel by weather and tradition. Some groups survive by aggression; some by wiliness; some by fleetness of foot. All are, by need, practical to the extreme in their own ways. Their descriptive names include The People, The Traders, The Raiders and The Cliff Dwellers.

The author does a fine job of revealing the characters in the story, mostly by a series of human interactions and disasters they must overcome. They need to survive various challenges such as famine, flood, extreme weather, animal attacks, and attacks from other groups. He mixes in a satisfying array of descriptive facts about ancient times such as basket-weaving, flint arrowheads, bowstrings and rope made from hemp, and the making of Agave liquor, among many others.

Sex plays a vital role for these people, since their lives are short and they need to breed often to ensure their survival. The author's treatment of the subject is down to earth and entertaining but not pornographic. He describes the other exigencies of life, such as hunting and the gathering and preparation of food, encampment, travel, trading and defense in a colorful and informative way.

I recommend this book to anyone wanting an entertaining read about ancient life. There are several surprises along the way, and an ending that is the biggest surprise of all.

Thrown Under the Omnibus: A Reader, by P. J. O'Rourke

P.J. O’Rourke has had a prolific career as one of America’s most celebrated humorists. But that career almost didn’t happen. As he tells it, “I began to write for pay in the spring of 1970. To tell the truth I didn’t even mean to be a writer, I meant to be a race car driver, but I didn’t have a race car.”

Fortunately for us, he had to settle for writing. From his early pieces for the National Lampoon, through his classic reporting as Rolling Stone’s International Affairs editor in the 80s and 90s, and his brilliant, inimitable political journalism and analysis, P.J. has been entertaining and provoking readers with high octane prose, a gonzo Republican attitude and a rare ability to make you laugh out loud. Chris Buckley once described his work as “S.J. Perlman on acid” and when Penguin first published its Dictionary of Modern Humorous Quotations PJ had more entries than any living writer.

For the first time Thrown Under the Omnibus brings together his funniest, most outrageous, most controversial and most loved pieces in the definitive P.J. reader. Handpicked and introduced by the humorist himself, Thrown Under the Omnibus is the essential P.J. O’Rourke anthology.

Review
Praise for Thrown Under the Omnibus:

“The world is short on laughs these days . . . Excellent timing, then, for the release of a thick collection of humorist P.J. O’Rourke’s work, culled from his 16 books by the author himself . . . Mr. O’Rourke has had a full and illustrious career, including stints at National Lampoon, Car and Driver and Rolling Stone. He occupies a rare place among the laughing class: He has somehow avoided the orifice obsession that captivates many of its members; he identifies as Republican; and he is no mere thumb-sucker, having visited more than 40 countries to report on wars, regime changes, economic revolutions and the experience of drinking cocktails garnished with the poison sacs of cobras.”—Wall Street Journal

“Outspoken conservatives have long been a minority in comedy, particularly in the mainstream media, which provided an opportunity for P.J. O’Rourke, who for decades cornered the market for prominent right-wing humorists . . . If his wry essays have a mission statement . . . it’s this: Starchy Republicanism is really, really fun.”—New York Times Book Review

“[P.J. O’Rourke] was really the first to inject-non-liberal hilarity into political discourse . . . But more important, he was able to yank conservatives out of the hands of the humorless and shrill, and make such writing accessible . . . He changed my life . . . If you don’t know him—you have your chance. Buy his new omnibus—an anthology of more good writing than you’d find in ten years of reading Proust.”—Greg Gutfeld

“The only member of Woodstock Nation smart enough to brand himself as a conservative . . . O’Rourke’s career omnibus is best enjoyed from the depths of a button back chair with a glass of something golden at your side. Since the book is impossible to lift, the chair should be a stout one.”—Independent (UK)

Praise for P.J. O'Rourke:

About the Author
P. J. O'Rourke has written sixteen books on subjects as diverse as politics and cars and etiquette and economics. His book about Washington, Parliament of Whores, and his book about international conflict and crisis, Give War a Chance, both reached #1 on the New York Times bestseller list. He is a contributing editor at the Weekly Standard, H. L. Mencken fellow at the Cato Institute, a regular panelist on NPR's Wait Wait . . . Don't Tell Me, and a columnist for the Daily Beast. He lives in rural New England, as far away from the things he writes about as he can get.

Too Much PJ?
By Andy in Washington
I must confess, I am a big fan of P.J. O’Rourke. And while I may not always agree with his politics or opinions, I almost always find his work entertaining. This book represents some of his work over the last 30 years or so.

=== The Good Stuff ===

* O’Rourke is one of those writers whose work either you like or hate. Almost no one I have ever met is neutral on the subject. As always, his writing is sarcastic, humorous, tongue-in-cheek, serious, funny, sad, happy, offensive, sensitive and just about any other adjective you can think of.

* Some of the works reprinted in this anthology are P.J. at his absolute best. His tale of tourism in war-torn Lebanon tells more about life in this part of the world than any serious story I have ever read on the subject. Likewise, I found myself laughing out loud at his descriptions of a “Peace Tour” of the Soviet Union- and at the same time gaining an understanding of what life was like.

* While O’Rourke definitely skews toward the conservative or libertarian end of the political spectrum, his is not a zealot about preaching doctrine. He points out humor, silliness and ridiculousness wherever he sees it, including in his own experiences and past history.

* The book is a nice sampling of O’Rourke’s work. My personal favorites of his stories are those relating his travels in various war-torn countries and underdeveloped hellholes. He has a remarkable talent for relating daily life, showing something of the good and bad in the residents and hanging out with the “fun” people.

=== The Not-So-Good Stuff ===

* The book is long. It might be a bit much for someone not used to PJ’s writing style, especially if you try to read the whole thing at once.

* Some of O’Rourke’s work is timeless, but some his not. His tales of drinking and driving from 30 years ago just fall flat in the face of modern social values. Also, some of his more historical writings may be lost on younger readers who have no memories of the Iron Curtain or the Soviet Union.

=== Summary ===

I had read many of the stories in this book previously, but I enjoyed rereading most of them. For the most part, I enjoy O’Rourke’s writing style and observations, and many of them are still relevant. While much of his commentary is somewhat political, it is not the diatribe of the talking heads, but rather a look at the strange happenings in the world through the eyes of a conservative commentator. If you haven’t been exposed to the author previously, you might want to sample one or two of his works before taking on this anthology.

=== Disclaimer ===

I was able to read an advance copy through the courtesy of the publisher and NetGalley.

A field guide to the best writing in O'Rourke's books since 1983.
By Craig Matteson
I have been a fan of P J O’Rourke’s for several decades. While I admire him and enjoy his writing I do no mistake him for a partisan Conservative or someone who is working for the GOP and against the Democrats. He is willing to skewer everyone; everyone who deserves skewering. And that is, well, everyone. I have always found his writing informative, enjoyable to read, his humor always seems like it should be more predictable and repetitive than it is. He is wittier than you suppose and slips the knife in but you laugh before you understand exactly where it has been placed, maybe in you and yours.

Some have referred to this as a greatest hits album. I guess it is. But I think of it as a way to peruse his best writing from his books over the decades and see how his views have changed and what has remained more or less constant. What he had hoped for (not much) and what disappointed him (nearly everything). If O’Rourke has one flaw that makes me put down his books and give them time to rest before I pick them up again is that I find it too pat to just piss on everyone and everything. In his work that matters to me the most, he does find some hope, some positive energy and a real effort to make the benighted wake up.

While I do not claim to have read every word that the author has written (and here we only get excerpts from his books, not samples of his columns), I do have more than a few of them at home and my favorites are: “Parliament of Whores”, “Give War a Chance”, “All the Trouble in the World” , and my favorite of all is “Eat the Rich”. I also enjoyed “The CEO of the Sofa” and “On The Wealth of Nations”. Do I have to point out that it is perfectly fine if your views vary from mine?

So, why would someone who has all or most of this author’s books want to get this one, too? Is it just a form of OCD? Is it a desire to make a wealthy writer even wealthier? Simple. If you don’t buy into my earlier statement of strolling through his best writing in one shorter hike than rereading whole books, think about it another way. If, like me, you are old enough to have purchased his books when they were new and enjoyed them when they were in the news, you now likely have children (and possibly grandchildren) who are adults and have likely NOT read O’Rourke’s works.

Why didn’t they read them, because he was YOUR author and therefore utterly uncool in their youthful world. But now they are older and reconsidering their values (revaluing their values as their once beloved Nietzsche once put it). They are not going to push through the whole book or understand the references to current events. Here we have the writing the author and the editor think that best stand on its own. You can give them the gift of O’Rourke in one handy field manual!

One thing we do not get in this book, beyond the brief introduction, is the author’s views of each of the works, reminiscences about writing the book, the struggles with the editor, a recounting of the way the critics and public reacted to it at its release, or the settling of old scores. We just get the writing. And that is fine. We enjoy the author for his writing, after all. Maybe he will give us a different book wandering through the corridors of how he went through his own life. But I kind of doubt it. Confession really doesn’t seem to be his thing beyond the persona he has created as a device for his writing. I have no idea how much of what the author says about himself is real and how much is a writing device. And even if he told us what was what, would he be leveling with us? Who knows.

Let’s just enjoy his writing and insights.

a greatest hits compilation
By D. H.
I have to admit that based on the blurb I was expecting articles from The National Lampoon, Rolling Stone, The Atlantic, The Wall Street Journal, various car magazines, etc. Instead the material in this book is all taken from his previous books by this same publisher. As someone noted; a greatest hits compilation. It's like ordering a greatest hits album from an artist and realizing the songs are from one of the artist's labels, but not from all of the labels on which the artist recorded. Would love to have an anthology of his writings from all of those other miscellaneous sources.

Uncovering the Past: A History of Archaeology, by William H. Stiebing

When one hears the words "archaeology" or "archaeologist," often what comes to mind is an image of a romantic figure: Indiana Jones exploring exotic places in search of treasure and adventure. Indeed, novels, movies, and many popular accounts of archaeological discoveries have made this concept widespread. Tales of abandoned cities, ruined temples, primeval monuments, or mysterious ancient tombs tend to kindle the urge for adventure, exploration, or treasure hunting that seems to lie beneath the surface of even the most timid and conventional individuals. Today, however, archaeologists seek knowledge rather than objects that are intrinsically valuable. Their ultimate goal is to sweep aside the mists in which time has enveloped the past, helping us to understand vanished peoples and cultures.
In Uncovering the Past, William H. Stiebing, Jr. offers an absorbing nontechnical history of archaeology, tracing the study of ancient material culture from its beginnings in the Renaissance through its development into the sophisticated modern discipline we know today. The first study to focus on archaeology as a discipline, Stiebing has organized this concise history into the four stages of archaeological development. The first two stages (1450-1860 and 1860-1925), known as the "heroic age," focus on the exploits of colorful, dynamic excavators who have made their mark on history and our imaginations. We read accounts of Giovanni Belzoni and the removal of the seven-ton colossus of Ramesses II, which was dragged by wooden platform and transported by boat from Egypt to London; we witness the clergyman John Peters's skirmish with Arab tribesmen, who surrounded his excavation site and finally pillaged and burned his camp; and Heinrich Schliemann's quest to prove the authenticity of Homer's Iliad by searching for ancient Troy along the Turkish coast. And we watch as archaeology comes of age as an academic discipline, employing stratigraphical excavation techniques, typographical sequence dating, and stratigraphically based pottery chronology--laying the foundation for universal archaeological activity. The third phase (1925-1960) marked the era of "Modern Archaeology," a time when, using the now generally accepted stratigraphical method of excavation, scholars were able to synthesize data to define individual cultures and trace their development through time. This period saw a greater use of scientific instruments and procedures to locate, date, and interpret remains, such as aerial photography, metal detectors, and most importantly, carbon-14 dating and tree-ring chronology. Lastly, Stiebing discusses the fourth phase of development (1960-present) which introduced a greater desire and need for a more complete understanding of ancient cultures, including their ecology, and attempts to explain why certain cultural phenomena occurred. He goes on to examine the greater emphasis on a cultural revolutionary approach, coupled with technological advances in robotics and computers over the last decade and a half and their commonplace role in modern archaeology.
With over eighty photographs, illustrations, and maps, this vivid history is an outstanding introduction to the intriguing field of archaeology, chronicling the development of this former pastime of dilettantes into a rigorous science.

From Publishers Weekly
Stiebing's concise, wonderfully vivid, engrossing history conveys a sense of archeology as a great collective adventure by which humanity retrieves its past. Heinrich Schliemann's excavation of the Troy of Homer's Iliad, Arthur Evans's reconstruction of Minoan Crete, John Stephens's discovery of Mayan pyramids in Mexico and Austen Layard's remarkably swift location of Assyrian palaces are a few of the many phenomenal exploits recounted in a narrative that emphasizes advances in archeological techniques and methods. Stiebing, a professor of archeology at the University of New Orleans, reviews the mystery of immense prehistoric mounds in the Ohio Valley. His chronicle also encompasses India's carved cave temples at Ellora, advanced medieval cities of sub-Saharan Africa, finds in China, Indonesia and Cambodia, and underwater archeology. Stiebing dispassionately reviews the controversy surrounding the "new archeology," which uses computers and statistics in its quest to discover the laws of cultural dynamics. Illustrated.

From Library Journal
Profusely illustrated and with the usual chronology and reading suggestions appended, this volume is useful chiefly as an overview for students of the comparatively new discipline of archaeology. Steibing (history, Univ. of New Orleans) organizes his work into four evolutionary phases that extend through the "heroic age" of archaeology (1450-1925), discussed from a geographical/cultural perspective, to the close of World War I up to the present, which ushers in the beginnings of systemization and scientific method as a review of the various new methodologies. While many volumes exist on the finds of specific sites or on a specific excavation technique, this study focuses on the development of archaeology as a discipline, tracing the milestones in the evolution of systematic excavation. Do not expect here the wealth of titillating, arcane cultural details common to archaeological works. As such, it is more of a Cook's Tour and not very meaty, but it will serve.

An excellent starting point.

Finally! A readable, fun archaeology book!
As a university student of anthropology and archaeology with of course certain peculiar specializations and interests all my own, I often found myself lacking in a truly readable account of archaeology and its history in the general sense, though various lectures had tried to assemble such a survey (without success). 'Uncovering the Past' provides this account admirably, covers achaeological development over the entire globe, including western Europe, the ancient Near East, Egyptology, Aegean archaeology, the Far East, Africa and the Americas and Mesoamerica.
If you're interested in archaeology at all, whether at the academic level or purely for your own personal entertainment, I think this book provides an excellent starting point without all of the tedium that arises when one attempts to see the 'big picture' or acquire some sense of the general historical foundations of the field by treading through endless detailed site publications from various time periods or even summary accounts of any geographical region.
To put it another way: sit down and spend an afternoon reading it cover to cover, you'll enjoy it!

Hackneyed
By HH
This is a very conventional treatment of archaeology -- conventional both in methodology and in subject matter. Stiebing's book certainly breaks no new methodological ground; indeed, he is hardly concerned to reflect on the historiography of his discipline, or the quite significant discussions about the role of such historiography in building the archaeology of the 1990s. Stiebing seems completely unconcerned about these and other matters (particularly those connected to the further development of archaeological theory) that touch on issues that must now be part of any historical analysis of archaeology. Archaeology for Stiebing must be uncomplicated -- to go out and "uncover" the past, a task at which we are getting steadily better by the application of scientific methods and approaches. This kind of "soft-core positivism" gives the book an anachronistic feel, which is reinforced by the fact that this history of archaeology is (in the main) a history of Euro-American archaeology, with a bit of material from Asia and Africa thrown in to make up the weight. No history of archaeology in Australia or the Pacific is included, nor discussion of whole fields such as historical archaeology, and there is certainly little sense of connection between archaeological practice and the societies that have provided the context for all that activity.

The defense for this type of lopsided treatment stems from the assumption that students of classical antiquity, and American students of classical antiquity in particular, will find such a treatment more "relevant" to their interests. No one should dismiss this defense lightly, but it does tend to reinforce conventional intellectual frameworks rather than to provide the groundwork for change. If there is anything that characterizes both processual and post-processual archaeology over the last 30 years, it is the general ignorance of the history of archaeology among their respective protagonists. This ignorance has had some pernicious consequences -- the over-inflated claims for "theoretical" or methodological novelty, and the lack of a sense of the importance of an archaeological perspective on the past being the most obvious of them. This is a heavy burden for a book like this to bear, and it is probably the strongest defense for Stiebing's treatment of his subject. While it would be marvelous if histories of archaeology were conceived as contributions to these more fundamental debates, it is nonetheless true that Stiebing has made no great claims for this book and in doing so has produced a good-natured retelling of a now well-known story, spiced up with some original observations on antiquarians from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Most of what you would expect to find is here. Long chapters on Egypt, the Near East, the Aegean, and Italy form the foundation of the first part. This part (unfortunately called "Archaeology's 'Heroic Age"') covers in 227 pages the birth of prehistoric archaeology (one of the weaker chapters in the volume); the archaeology of the New World, the Far East, and Sub-Saharan Africa; and the development of archaeology under water as well. Part 2 of the volume ("Modern Archaeology") takes us from 1925 to the present in 29 pages. This is by far the weaker part of the book; indeed, the coverage is so brief and slight that it really is difficult to see why it has been included. To state that this section is both parochial and naive is understatement. So much for the creation of world prehistory, or indeed the notion of archaeology as a complex intellectual structure spanning a vast array of social and cultural contexts. Still, Stiebing manages to gloss a phenomenal amount of material into this pathetically inadequate space. He also provides an appendix, "Major Events and Discoveries in the History of Archaeology:' which begins in 1446 and ends in 1991.

In my view, the problems with part 2 of the book and the general methodological naivete that permeates the whole enterprise have the same source. Surely there is more to learn from the history of archaeology than cautionary tales, a sense of humility, or a catalog of wrong and right turnings; but then this may be wholly irrelevant for Stiebing's audience. I wish I could be confident that it is not.

A perfect overview and starting point!
By A Customer
This book was understandable since it lacked scientific jargon. It was still in depth and expository without containing too many confusing statements that so many other archeological books heavily rely upon. The text was arranged in an organized way and covered a very wide topic area. This book was interesting from beginning to end and the various pictures added the pugnancy of the book's texts tremendously. My ONLY criticism of this book is the mention of biblical topics somewhat frequently and the over use of the word 'antiquites'! Yet, it gave a flavor of different ancient worlds and explained archeology quite nicely. Overall it was a very good read.
