Dan Abnett should write all Guardians of the Galaxy tales

Dan Abnett is a great comic writer and brought the Guardians of the Galaxy back to life in the comic world with power and depth. His run on the title is, in my opinion, the best. He brought new characters to the forefront of the Marvel world and created stories that caused readers to anxiously await next month's release. The Brian Bendis stories are contemporary with the movie and thus probably more read, but they pale in comparison as regards character development, interaction, depth and fun. Dan Abnett continues this effort with his "prose" novel Rocket Raccoon and Groot. There is a ton of fun in this book. Comics are meant to be good, and fun. Dan Abnett is all about fun in this book, but with strong writing and intelligence. If you are looking for a book that takes itself very seriously, this is not it. Don't get me wrong, Dan Abnett is a serious writer, but he allows us to walk with him in an imaginary, fun world and it is a blast.

Easily one of the most engaging and funny books I have read in a while. Abnett's Triumff came to mind many time throughout the book in line with Rocket's Sarcasm. Overall I would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of Dan Abnett or Rocket and Groot.

This is a wonderful story. Our family absolutely fell in love with The Guardians of the Galaxy movie, in particular, Groot. Dan Abnett wrote our favorite book of the year, Rocket and Groot: Steal the Galaxy. We read it aloud together, enjoying all the fun and frivolity. Loving every word, and anticipating the delight each new page would give us. We truly hope there is a second book, then a third, fourth, fifth, etc., from Dan Abnett and the Guardians of the Galaxy.

From a basic start to as far as you want to go

When I start to look at a book on Excel I first turn to the index and look up Pivot Tables. Pivot tables are an amazingly powerful tool that allows you to turn the data around (pivot even) and look at it from another point of view. It's also amazing that a high percentage of books on Excel simply ignore pivot tables altogether, or perhaps give them half a page. This book has an entire chapter on pivot tables. Furthermore, if you read the Microsoft help screens on pivot tables you get 113 topics to read. In this book the description of pivot tables explains what they are, shows you some examples to illustrate what can be done, and then leads you through using them. This is truly what the manual should have shown, if of course there was a manual that came with Excel.

The next thing I look for is XML. This is really the big thing that makes Excel 2003 a new edition of Excel. Sure enough, a chapter on XML as well. (Except for this section and a few very minor points, you can use the manual for earlier versions of Excel.)

But suppose you are not up to guru level and wanting to know about pivot tables and XML. Well, the book starts off with Creating a Basic Worksheet and goes on from there.

This is the ideal Excel walkthrough. It's a balanced blend of basic and advanced information that has a gentle learning curve that will take you all the way from creating your first spreadsheet through the basics of macro development. The book is organized into eight parts, though the first four make up the majority of the book. Part one covers the basics of editing, files, printing, saving. Part two is all about formula creation. Part three is about templates and lists. Part four is about charting and graphics. After that it's into networking, macros, and more advanced topics.

The writing is excellent and the use of screenshots is effective and not overwhelming as with other books. A superb walkthrough of the fundamentals of Excel.

Contemporary Research on crime, prisons, and social control has largely ignored women. Partial Justice, the only full-scale study of the origins and development of women’s prisons in the United States, traces their evolution from the late eighteenth century to the present day. It shows that the character of penal treatment was involved in the very definition of womanhood for incarcerated women, a definition that varied by race and social class.

Rafter traces the evolution of women’s prisons, showing that it followed two markedly different models. Custodial institutions for women literally grew out of men’s penitentiaries, starting from a separate room for women. Eventually women were housed in their own separate facilities–a development that ironically inaugurated a continuing history of inmate neglect. Then, later in the nineteenth century, women convicted of milder offenses, such as morals charges, were placed into a new kind of institution. The reformatory was a result of middle-class reform movements, and it attempted to rehabilitate to a degree unknown in men’s prisons. Tracing regional and racial variations in these two branches of institutions over time, Rafter finds that the criminal justice system has historically meted out partial justice to female inmates. Women have benefited in neither case.

Partial Justice draws in first-hand accounts, legislative documents, reports by investigatory commissions, and most importantly, the records of over 4,600 female prisoners taken from the original registers of five institutions. This second edition includes two new chapters that bring the story into the present day and discusses measures now being used to challenge the partial justice women have historically experienced.

About the Author
Jack Erjavec has become a fixture in the automotive textbook publishing world. He has decades of experience as a technician, educator, author, and editor, and has authored or co-authored more than 30 automotive textbooks and training manuals. Erjavec holds a master's degree in vocational and technical education from Ohio State University, and he spent twenty years at Columbus State Community College as an instructor and administrator. A long-time affiliate of the North American Council of Automotive Teachers, he also served as executive vice-president for the organization and spent several years on its board of directors. Erjavec is also associated with ATMC, SAE, ASA, ATRA, AERA, and other automotive professional associations.

Ken Pickerill is a Certified Master Automotive Technician (with ASE Area L1) and an instructor at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. Mr. Pickerill was a technician for 22 years before entering into the training field. Pickerill has more than 36 years of technical and teaching experience. He received his M.S. degree in career and technical education from Indiana State University.
