Yikes!

You will be sailing into heavy obscure grammatical phraseology. Here is an example:
"This relative incorporates its antecedent (Sm. sec.2536); i.e., there is no antecedent present in the main clause, but if it were there explicitly, it would have been genitive plural, a partitive genitive after the superlative adjective. So the genitive plural seem to serve as the object of the verb "ismen". If this construction were artificially spread out, it would be...etc."

If you understand this, buy the book. Otherwise, it would seem to me to confuse matters rather than clear them up.

Brilliant, but move on

I can only agree with the other reviewers. This is as good as political science gets. Pure brilliance.
When you have read this book - you really should! - then you can move on to more current studies that uses Schattschneider's ideas and develops them much further. Rochefort & Cobb: "The Politics of Problem Definition", Baumgartner & Jones: "Agendas and Instability in American Politics", Cobb & Ross: "Cultural Strategies of Agenda Denial" and Jones: "Reconceiving Decision-Making in Democratic Politics" should all interest you once you've fallen in love with the thoughts of Schattschneider. Your view of politics will never be the same again.

Traditional Theories of Democracy and Responsible Parties

Schattschneider takes issue with traditional theories of democracy which suggest that "the people really do decide what the government does on something like a day-to-day basis" (133). Rather, he contends that such an old conception of democracy does not capture the reality of politics and governance in the US. Rather, Schattschneider contends that "Democracy is a competitive political system in which competing leaders and organizations define the alternatives of public policy in such a way that the public can participate in the decision-making process" (141). In part, Schattschneider seems to support the "responsible parties" model, which posits that strong, centralized parties with clear and specific platforms should be in control of government, and only then can be held accountable to the masses. The argument posits that a real majority interest exists, and that the majority - organized around a strong party - has the right to control government. Weak parties, on the other hand, would have difficulty in governing effectively. Officeholders may defect, the party platform may not be binding, and subsequently accountability would be weakened.
In part, Schattschneider is arguing against conceptions of pluralist democracy, in which various groups form around similar interest in order to pressure government to adopt specific policies. Schattschneider contends that the pressure is system is biased, and particularly favors bourgeoisie interests. Because such interests are quite powerful, they are better able to pressure the system in pursuit of their particular interests. Because the pressure system is biases, we have to reject the pluralist and group theory assumptions that all people can formulate groups around their own interests and bring pressure to bear on the system.
Schattschneider contends that two large, cohesive parties help mitigate problems associated with pressure politics. He contends that the large parties are not aggregates of interest groups. First, pressure groups are too small to make an impact on the party. Second, pressure groups are not party neutral, but like the masses, must align with one party or the other. As such, the party has power over the interest groups, not the other way around. Furthermore, because the big, consolidated parties must mobilize large segments of the population in order to gain control, less supported issues or conflicts are overpowered by bigger, more popular issues with which the masses are more interested in, and have a greater stake. As such, cleavages over large issues divide the political space. The "sides" of the cleavages can be unequal; we see the formation of majorities and minorities. The goal of the parties is to control or exploit these cleavages. Schattschneider writes, "To understand the nature of the party conflict it is necessary to consider the function of the cleavages exploited by the parties in their struggle for supremacy. Since the development of cleavages is a prime instrument of power, the party which is able to make its definition of issues prevail, is likely to take over government" (73).

A classic work in American politics

E. E. Schattschneider was one of the most important political scientists of the middle part of the 20th century. His work has had an influence on many analysts of politics. This slender volume, although brief, is one of his more provocative and influential works. Ideas from this book show up in the work of many others.

Let's take a look at just two of the many provocative points that he makes.

A central assumption underlying the work (Page v): ". . .the nature of political organization depends on the conflicts exploited in the political system, which ultimately is what politics is about." Understanding the scope of conflict is a central question in this book. Some want to keep conflict narrowly constrained and "private." If so, economic powerhouses will win out, because they would be dominant in that domain. Others, who wish government to get involved, try to broaden the scope of conflict so that political institutions get involved. If this is the case, then a different dynamic will be at work. In his view (Page 12), "Democratic government is the greatest single instrument for the socialization of conflict in the American community." By widening the scope of conflict, the people can become important players.

A second important argument that he makes represents a critique of the view that democracy is enhanced by the existence of organized interest groups, since these represent the views of many people and inject a democratic influence into the political process. Schattschneider demurs. First, the members of these interest groups are not typical of all people. In a famous line, he notes that (Pages 34-35): "The vice of the groupist theory is that it conceals the most significant aspect of the system. The flaw in the pluralist heaven is that the heavenly chorus sings with a strong upper-class accent. Probably about 90% of the people cannot get into the pressure system."

Anyway, this is a wonderful little book. Of course, there are some issues that emerge: sometimes arguments are not developed enough (brevity in this book is a plus, but it sometimes seems to leave some points "hanging"); he may downplay some positive aspects of the interest group system. However, in the main, his arguments remain as fresh today as they were when the book first came out, in 1960. Still worth a read!

I will not read this to my child and would never recommend it.

I am so sorry I purchased this book. I was so excited because the boy on the cover resembled my multiracial son.

Half, if not more, of this book was focused on self hatred. How he hates his curly hair and his ugly brown eye. That the boy hates to be mixed.

I will not read this to my child and would never recommend it.

So excited to share this book with my daughter but couldnt even do that because the layout of the book was so negative. one page saying "please take the mix out me". Yes children who are mixed may feel different but the author needed to go about in a more positive way instead of having every page being things that the child hates about themselves. Returning it!!

AMAZING BOOK!

This is a FANTASTIC BOOK! My wife and my son read it almost every night. He really enjoys looking at the illustrations, but even at four he already has a better understanding that it doesn't matter that he comes from two different racial backgrounds. This book really made it easy for us to start the conversation about the physical and cultural differences in our family and focus on the love that we have as a family. Even my in-laws have become more accepting after reading this book, as they see the importance of celebrating our child and that there are more outlets than ever that cater to these differences. My niece who is fully African-American liked the book so much that she was asking why she couldn't be mixed race. I did tell her that in a sense we are all mixed race and that this book is for everyone! A MUST BUY FOR ALL families, you will not be sorry!

This book challenges the approaches to human interaction based on supposedly universal 'maxims of conversation' and 'principles of politeness, ' which fly in the face of reality as experienced by millions of people crossing language boundaries (refugees, immigrants, etc.) and which cannot help in the practical tasks of cross-cultural communication and education. In contrast to such approaches, this book is both theoretical and practical: it shows that in different societies, norms of human interaction are different and reflect different cultural attitudes and values; and it offers a framework within which different cultural norms and different ways of speaking can be effectively explored, explained, and taught.

The book discusses data from a wide range of languages and it shows that the meanings expressed in human interaction and the different 'cultural scripts' prevailing in different speech communities can be clearly and intelligibly described and compared by using a 'natural semantic metalanguage, ' based on empirically established universal human concepts. As the book shows, this metalanguage can be used as a basis for teaching successful cross-cultural communication, including the teaching of languages in a cultural context.

This book is excellent for those who are interested to know how and why people from different cultures usually express their likes and dislikes, compliments and invitations. You will see what to expect and how to interpret the phrases of your foreign friends and colleagues. The author illustrates speech patters and certain words' connotations that we have acquired through our cultural traditions in a simple manner - you don't have to be a linguist to understand her ideas.

I used many examples in my Introduction to Linguistics lectures with the first year students and I think they really enjoyed them.

The book really makes you rethink everything that you have already learned about people from other countries.

About the Author
Tyler is Professor of Music and Director of the Early Music Performance Program at the University of Southern California.

Paul speaks for strong resilient relationships within the parish, and brave collaborative links across places. Mind-blowing story of an amazing survivor!

One word, Wow! I just blew through this book, truly could not put it down. Carissa Phelps has an incredible story to tell, gut-wrenching, horrifying, and ultimately motivating. I was brought to tears many times while reading this book, not just during the frantic street scenes, but even more when Carissa starts recounting the many helping hands that helped to pull her out of the victimization that she was experiencing. As a mother myself, with a young daughter, Carissa's experiences that she had as a young girl, simply looking for someone to love her, to take care of her, spoke volumes to me. It has motivated me even more to want to be there for her. Thank you Carissa for sharing your story and thank you for all that you are doing now to help young women out of the dead-end street life.

What an amazing story! Carissa speaks with such raw honesty as she lets you into her world of neglect, lonliness, abuse, and eventually triumph. Her story is another example of the many youth that fall through the cracks of the system. But it's also a story of what an impact one person, "one helping hand at a time" can make in the lives of these youth. The people that stuck with her and continued to believe in her through even the thoughest of times helped Carissa eventually become one of the most motivating and inspiring modern day survivor, advocate, and thriver! She truly is doing God's work and I know her story will inspire and encourage many, many people! I hope it moves others to get involved and make a difference in the life of a child in need so we can have many more stories as powerful as the life of Carissa Phelps!

Gritty, Real and Absolutely Inspiring

This book tore my heart out and then filled that wound with hope and healing. It is a clear-eyed look at what happens to a 12-year-old girl on the streets. The author does not flinch from events that others might turn away from, imply, or obscure. The question that permeates the book is how can you survive those kinds of experiences? How can you go on? The author who doesn't spare us the brutality of her life, also doesn't hesitate to credit the many kind, generous and good people who reach out to her. In one scene, she is taken to a doctor by the police. During the exam, she refuses to let the doctor go further, and the doctor doesn't push or insist, he instantly respects the wishes of this child in front of him. The author says it is the first time she said "No," and someone listened. It is such a small thing, but I wanted to hug that doctor. Every teacher needs to read about her high school math teacher Mrs. Wegerman. Every corrections officer and youth worker needs to read about her counselor in the California Youth Authority, Ron Jenkins. Anyone who has a daughter needs to read this book. It will galvanize your commitment to protect and nurture your children, no matter how troubled your relationship.
