It is a text grounded in the profession’s belief that addressing psychosocial issues is at the “core” of all occupational therapy.

Psychosocial Frames of Reference: Core for Occupation-Based Practice, Third Edition describes the three variables of person, activity, and environment and helps the reader to understand the relationships among these variables as they are viewed by the theoretical models presented in the text. The text provides an overview of the evolution of mental health theory models and thereby helps the reader put information into perspective. Theoretical summaries are supplemented with extensive bibliographies that the reader can explore and use as a springboard for finding evidence-for-practice. The theoretical and practice guides provided in the text act as a basis for clinical reasoning and help the reader in the selection of a particular frame of reference and the identification of intervention strategies.

  • Comprehensive discussions of the occupational therapy, psychological, social, and cognitive theories that create the foundation for practice.
  • Extensive bibliography that reflects both breadth and depth, and contributes to the knowledge needed for evidence-based practice.
  • Comprehensive discussion of the theoretical basis for client-centered practice in occupational therapy.
  • Rather than providing a “recipe” for intervention, this text gives the reader a way to reason and discriminate among the multiple avenues that intervention could take.

Alan Turing : The Enigma, by Andrew Hodges

Listed as one of the essential 50 books of all time in The Guardian

It's only a slight exaggeration to say that the British mathematician Alan Turing (1912-1954) saved the Allies from the Nazis, invented the computer and artificial intelligence, and anticipated gay liberation by decades―all before his suicide at age forty-one. This classic biography of the founder of computer science, reissued on the centenary of his birth with a substantial new preface by the author, is the definitive account of an extraordinary mind and life.

A gripping story of mathematics, computers, cryptography, and homosexual persecution, Andrew Hodges's acclaimed audiobook captures both the inner and outer drama of Turing's life. Hodges tells how Turing's revolutionary idea of 1936―the concept of a universal machine―laid the foundation for the modern computer and how Turing brought the idea to practical realization in 1945 with his electronic design. The audiobook also tells how this work was directly related to Turing's leading role in breaking the German Enigma ciphers during World War II, a scientific triumph that was critical to Allied victory in the Atlantic. At the same time, this is the tragic story of a man who, despite his wartime service, was eventually arrested, stripped of his security clearance, and forced to undergo a humiliating treatment program―all for trying to live honestly in a society that defined homosexuality as a crime.

Amazon.com Review
Alan Turing died in 1954, but the themes of his life epitomize the turn of the millennium. A pure mathematician from a tradition that prided itself on its impracticality, Turing laid the foundations for modern computer science, writes Andrew Hodges:

Alan had proved that there was no "miraculous machine" that could solve all mathematical problems, but in the process he had discovered something almost equally miraculous, the idea of a universal machine that could take over the work of any machine.

During World War II, Turing was the intellectual star of Bletchley Park, the secret British cryptography unit. His work cracking the German's Enigma machine code was, in many ways, the first triumph of computer science. And Turing died because his identity as a homosexual was incompatible with cold-war ideas of security, implemented with machines and remorseless logic: "It was his own invention, and it killed the goose that laid the golden eggs."

Andrew Hodges's remarkable insight weaves Turing's mathematical and computer work with his personal life to produce one of the best biographies of our time, and the basis of the Derek Jacobi movie Breaking the Code. Hodges has the mathematical knowledge to explain the intellectual significance of Turing's work, while never losing sight of the human and social picture:

In this sense his life belied his work, for it could not be contained by the discrete state machine. At every stage his life raised questions about the connection (or lack of it) between the mind and the body, thought and action, intelligence and operations, science and society, the individual and history.

And Hodges admits what all biographers know, but few admit, about their subjects: "his inner code remains unbroken." Alan Turing is still an enigma. --Mary Ellen Curtin

Review
"One of the finest scientific biographies ever written."--Jim Holt, New Yorker

"Andrew Hodges' 1983 book Alan Turing: The Enigma, is the indispensable guide to Turing's life and work and one of the finest biographies of a scientific genius ever written."--Michael Hiltzik, Los Angeles Times

"Turing's rehabilitation from over a quarter-century's embarrassed silence was largely the result of Andrew Hodges's superb biography, Alan Turing: The Enigma (1983; reissued with a new introduction in 2012). Hodges examined available primary sources and interviewed surviving witnesses to elucidate Turing's multiple dimensions. A mathematician, Hodges ably explained Turing's intellectual accomplishments with insight, and situated them within their wider historical contexts. He also empathetically explored the centrality of Turing's sexual identity to his thought and life in a persuasive rather than reductive way."--Michael Saler, Times Literary Supplement

"On the face of it, a richly detailed 500-page biography of a mathematical genius and analysis of his ideas, might seem a daunting proposition. But fellow mathematician and author Hodges has acutely clear and often extremely moving insight into the humanity behind the leaping genius that helped to crack the Germans' Enigma codes during World War II and bring about the dawn of the computer age. . . . This melancholy story is transfigured into something else: an exploration of the relationship between machines and the soul and a full-throated celebration of Turing's brilliance, unselfconscious quirkiness and bravery in a hostile age."--Sinclair McKay, Wall Street Journal

"A first-class contribution to history and an exemplary work of biography."--I. J. Good, Nature

"An almost perfect match of biographer and subject. . . . [A] great book."--Ray Monk, Guardian

"A superb biography. . . . Written by a mathematician, it describes in plain language Turing's work on the foundations of computer science and how he broke the Germans' Enigma code in the Second World War. The subtle depiction of class rivalries, personal relationships, and Turing's tragic end are worthy of a novel. But this was a real person. Hodges describes the man, and the science that fascinated him--which once saved, and still influences, our lives."--Margaret Boden, New Scientist

"Andrew Hodges's magisterial Alan Turing: The Enigma . . . is still the definitive text."--Joshua Cohen, Harper's

"Andrew Hodges's biography is a meticulously researched and written account detailing every aspect of Turing's life. . . . This account of Turing's life is a definitive scholarly work, rich in primary source documentation and small-grained historical detail."--Mathematics Teacher

"The Bible of Turing biography."--Alvy Ray Smith, Notices of the AMS

From the Back Cover

"One of the finest scientific biographies I've ever read: authoritative, superbly researched, deeply sympathetic, and beautifully told."--Sylvia Nasar, author of A Beautiful Mind

"A captivating, compassionate portrait of a first-rate scientist who gave so much to a world that in the end cruelly rejected him. Perceptive and absorbing, Andrew Hodges's book is scientific biography at its best."--Paul Hoffman, author of The Man Who Loved Only Numbers

"A remarkable and admirable biography."--Simon Singh, author of The Code Book and Fermat's Enigma

"A first-rate presentation of the life of a first-rate scientific mind.... It is hard to imagine a more thoughtful and compassionate portrait of a human being."--from the Foreword by Douglas Hofstadter

A book for the dedicated math fan
By Loves to Knit
"The Imitation Game" was my favorite movie of 2014. I devoured the shows on PBS about cracking Enigma. I was glad to start reading this book. Soon I wasn't so glad. The writer, a mathematician, doesn't have the gift for narrative needed to bring Turing, and the group at Bletchley Park, to life.
The trivia included rather than pruned shows a lack of writing skill. For example, in early chapters about Turing's schooling, one reads nearly every note sent home by a schoolmaster. But a more major event (nailing Turing under floorboards) was glossed over in a sentence without a comment by the author as to impact, or primary source quote concerning the incident.
More troubling is the utter boring chapter on Bletchley Park. How can this chapter be boring? Yet it is. The explanation and sketches of how Turing's machine worked are unsatisfactory. I didn't learn anything from the authors (and I had several advanced math classes in college). I contrast this with biographies of physicists, contemporaries of Turing but written by writers (Richard Rhodes, for example): gripping books that manage to explain quantum theory or the workings of particle accelerators quite well.
Absolutely unsettling is the jarring way the author skips from topic to topic. On one page he note that Turing accepted his sexual orientation; on the next there is talk of suicide. Again, there is no comment by the author. Considering how Turing's life ended, one would expect more explication here. Related to this topic is the story of Turing and Bob Augenfeld, the young refugee Turing sponsored. Turing propositioning the minor Augenfeld would today be classed as sexual predation, yet the author glossed over it, noting that Augenfeld remained friends with Turing. An alternative explanation might be that Augenfeld hoped Turing would help get his mother out of Vienna, and did not seek to sever the relationship for this reason. This was in 1941.
In summary, this book was slow reading, even for someone interested in the man and the topic. I give it 3 stars because of the importance of the topic and the many contribution Turing made to mathematics and computer sciences.

Not an easy read, and a long book
By Catherine A Young
This book is a difficult read. I have a science background, and technology does not slow me down, but I found the writing at some times inscrutable. Not an easy read, and a long book.

Too many digressions and diversions at the beginning!
By Inquiring Reader
I am upgrading my review from *** to **** as I plow through the book. The book is quite good, but quite detailed or technical. Not for a general reader.

It is quite good to see the role that Turing played during WW II and how effective he was. He was also very ineffective at times because he was clueless about social clues and unwilling/unable to understand military/war hierarchies. Still a fascinating and detailed, detailed, and more detailed book.

My original review:

Digression after digression, especially at the beginning of the book. Do I really need to know what letters Turing sent to a friend's mother or how she replied? Quite distracting. Too many digressions about historical figures, too. There is too much of that in the first 15% or so of the book.

Once the book gets into Turing's post-graduate work and his work to create computers, that kind detail is very useful -- and relevant.

I ordered this book as a Kindle book, because there were too many complaints about the small font in the print copies. It's easy to read on a Kindle app.

About the Author
Bill (Mr. Honda) Silver was born in San Diego, California, and attended Sweetwater High School, where he enrolled in double sessions of Auto Shop. Hewas invited to be a representative of the school at the Chrysler Troubleshooting contest in 1966. His first motorcycle was a 1967 domestic version of the CL90 Scrambler. On one three-day adventure, he rode the bike 1,500 miles from sea level to over 6,000-foot elevations in late April, where the temperatures dropped to twenty degrees at night. The little 90 Scrambler perked along Californias highways at 50-60 mph for hours at a time, delivering 100 mpg consistently. This outstanding performance was the turning point for his desire to ride Hondas as his exclusive make for years to come. Learning by owning, he bought and sold over 300 vehicles (mostly Honda motorcycles) in a forty year period, gleaning design information, repair tips and bike history data, while continuing to increase his respect for Honda products, large and small. His smallest acquisitions were the P50 Little Hondas, as well as a rare domestic 1952 F Cub. The largest, to date, have been several CBX sixes. Among the rare acquisitions over the past 48 years have been a 1953 Benly J, a 1960 CB92 #24, a 1957 JC57 Benly, a 1959 CE71, a 1962 CA77 Dream, a CYP77 Police bike and a 1966 CP450 Police bike. Bills passion for Honda motorcycles led him to begin documenting the details of the 1961-67 Honda CB77 Super Hawks in 1992, followed by restoration guides for the 250-305cc Scramblers, and the CA72-77 Dreams, a few years later. In support of these models, he wrote a step-by-step engine repair manual, which included many of the details not covered in the factory shop manuals.

A GREAT general book on the older Honda Motorcycles

For the right audience, this book is a true gem. The "Buyer's Guide" part of it's title could be misleading but it is a great book for what it really does do. This is NOT a book that tells you how to buy a current Honda motorcyle from a dealer. It is also NOT a comprehensive listing/specification of every Honda model ever made. It does not replace a Clymer manual for any specific Honda model. This book's focus is for the collector/hobbiest who has a general interest is in Classic Hondas (most bikes more than 10 years old). It reviews the major models, has tons of excellent B&W photographs of each model (especially the models from the late 60's and early 70's which are often treated too lightly in other books). It gives the reader an idea of what Honda made and what they might like to get involved with. It tells about what kind of commitment it takes to buy, restore, and maintain these older bikes. As a person who has collected Honda's for 30 years, I found this book to a great addition to my literature collection and a great book to recommend to people that have a broad interest in the older Hondas. While this book does give some general ratings on the older bikes and rates them overall, this books true value is its wonderful overview of Honda's, especially those from 1959 through 1985, which I have not found in this detail in any other book on the market to date. This book should be a MUST HAVE for any Honda collector.

Leaves A Whole Bunch To Be Desired, But
By Zendicant Pangolin
This book in approximately 220 pps. in dimensions listed above does leave an awful lot to be desired, to wit larger and better illustrations, perhaps in color. It occurs to me that this is very much like a bird identification handbook.
If you've ever tried to wrestle with a Peterson's Guide (bird id field book), you'll know what it is like to use this one. The fact is that there isn't a whole lot of helpful information for somebody who has a raw bike or a lot of parts and wants to identify them. What the author has done is give a rundown of the various models imported to the United States accompanied by brief descriptions of what the bikes were and sometimes what were their significant factors.
Unfortunately, there isn't very much detail about any of the bikes and the accompanying black and white illustrations are about the size of a matchbox so even the details noted in the descriptions aren't really identifiable.

At least the book seems to cover all the models that were brought in to the USA and, crucially, it includes a large bibliography of websites, organizations, and titles that are helpful to those who are really serious about this topic.
I won't lie, I bought this book because I thought it would be filled with pretty pictures. It is not. Based on the description I bought it sight unseen? Would I pick it up off a bookshelf and buy it after leafing through it? Maybe not, definitely not at full list price maybe for a sawbuck plus a fin.

Four stars because I know that even with its major shortcomings, this book was a lot of work to put together.

HONDA MAN
By C.A.L.M.
THIS BOOK IS AN UPDATED VERSION OF ONE THAT CAME OUT ABOUT 10 YEARS AGO. IT IS EVEN BETTER THAN I EXPECTED. MORE PICTURES, DETAILS AND EXPLANATION OF THE BIKES. GOOD BOOK FOR THOSE WHO LIKE THE VINTAGE SIDE OF HONDA.

How and why rebel entrepreneurs "create the real growth drivers of an economy"
By Robert Morris
Rebels are iconoclasts, mavericks, outliers, etc. By nature, their thinking and initiatives are unconventional, unorthodox, and quite often disruptive as they challenge what (in Leading Change) James O'Toole so aptly characterizes as "the ideology of comfort and the tyranny of custom." In business, the term "rebel entrepreneur" is a redundancy. In this book, Jonathan Moules focuses on a number of people who have demonstrated that "acting in a way that does not follow the crowd can be a better way of managing your business if you really want to grow bigger and faster - what I call being a rebel entrepreneur."

Moules suggests that rebel entrepreneurs tend NOT to

o Seek bank loans for financing ("Funding is for fools: The case for bootstrapping.")
o Innovate; rather, they imitate [Note: My own opinion is that great entrepreneurs do both.]
o Be a hero
o Pay "the high cost of success"
o Get hung up on the business plan
o Downsize their way through difficult times
o Waste their time selling [Note: My own opinion is that great entrepreneurs avoid wasting anything but are NOT risk averse.]
o View setbacks as failures if valuable lessons are learned from them

Moules devotes a separate chapter to each of these eight. For example, Chapter 01: "Funding is for fools" ("The case for bootstrapping.") As he explains, "The topics I have chosen for this book reflect the breadth of issues an entrepreneur has to consider when building a company [or department, business unit, wholly-owned subsidiary, or division]. Each is a journey through tips I have picked up during six years of writing about entrepreneurship in the Financial Times."

Consider these remarks by Jack Welch, shared during a GE annual meeting years ago when he explained the reasons why he admired entrepreneurial companies:

"For one, they communicate better. Without the din and prattle of bureaucracy, people listen as well as talk; and since there are fewer of them they generally know and understand each other. Second, small companies move faster. They know the penalties for hesitation in the marketplace. Third, in small companies, with fewer layers and less camouflage, the leaders show up very clearly on the screen. Their performance and its impact are clear to everyone. And, finally, smaller companies waste less. They spend less time in endless reviews and approvals and politics and paper drills. They have fewer people; therefore they can only do the important things. Their people are free to direct their energy and attention toward the marketplace rather than fighting bureaucracy."

There is much to be said for rejecting or re-writing the "business "rule book" to which the subtitle of Moules's book refers if (HUGE "if") those rules are irrelevant to the needs, interests, values, resources, and strategic objectives of the given enterprise. However, even entrepreneurs (and especially, rebel entrepreneurs) will agree that several rules still have significant value. For example

o There is no business without customers
o Waste (of anything) is evil
o "Potential" means "you ain't done it yet" (Darrell Royal)
o "Vision without execution is hallucination." (Thomas Edison)
o "There is surely nothing quite so useless as doing with great efficiency what should not be done at all." (Peter Drucker)
o "Take great care of your people, they will take great care of your customers, and your customers will then take great care of your investors." (Herb Kelleher)

There are no head-snapping revelations in this book, nor does Moules make any such claim. Rather, citing dozens of real-world examples to illustrate key points, he offers a wealth of information, insights, and counsel that have substantial practical value. For whom did he write this book? Probably not for rebel entrepreneurs but surely for those who aspire to "build a better company" or "have a go at chasing that idea that [they] have nurtured for an enterprise." I also recommend this book to those who are preparing for a business career or have only recently embarked on one as well as to middle managers in large organizations. Although they may never launch a new company, they can certainly apply what they learn from Jonathan Moules to drive the growth of their careers.

Them: Adventures with Extremists, by Jon Ronson

From the bestselling author of The Psychopath Test: A Journey Through the Madness Industry and So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed.

A wide variety of extremist groups -- Islamic fundamentalists, neo-Nazis -- share the oddly similar belief that a tiny shadowy elite rule the world from a secret room. In Them, journalist Jon Ronson has joined the extremists to track down the fabled secret room.

As a journalist and a Jew, Ronson was often considered one of "Them" but he had no idea if their meetings actually took place. Was he just not invited? Them takes us across three continents and into the secret room. Along the way he meets Omar Bakri Mohammed, considered one of the most dangerous men in Great Britain, PR-savvy Ku Klux Klan Grand Wizard Thom Robb, and the survivors of Ruby Ridge. He is chased by men in dark glasses and unmasked as a Jew in the middle of a Jihad training camp. In the forests of northern California he even witnesses CEOs and leading politicians -- like Dick Cheney and George Bush -- undertake a bizarre owl ritual.

Ronson's investigations, by turns creepy and comical, reveal some alarming things about the looking-glass world of "us" and "them." Them is a deep and fascinating look at the lives and minds of extremists. Are the extremists onto something? Or is Jon Ronson becoming one of them?

Amazon.com Review
In Them, British humorist Jon Ronson relates his misadventures as he engages an assortment of theorists and activists residing on the fringes of the political, religious, and sociological spectrum. His subjects include Omar Bakri Mohammed, the point man for a holy war against Britain (Ronson paints him as a wily buffoon); a hypocritical but engaging Ku Klux Klan leader; participants in the Ruby Ridge and Waco, Texas, battles; the Irish Protestant firebrand Ian Paisley; and David Ickes, who believes that the semi-human descendants of evil extraterrestrial 12-foot-tall lizards walk among us. Despite these characters' disparities, they are bound by a belief in the Bilderberg Group, the "secret rulers of the world." In a final chapter, Ronson manages, with surprising ease, to penetrate these rulers' very lair. He writes with wry, faux-naive wit and eschews didacticism, instead letting his subjects' words and actions speak for themselves. --H. O'Billovitch

From Publishers Weekly
U.K. journalist Ronson offers a look into the world of political, cultural and religious "extremists" who dwell at the edges of popular culture and the conspiracy theorists who love them. His only criteria for groups' inclusion as extremists is "that they have been called extremists by others," which may explain why the Anti-Defamation League is profiled along with the modern-day KKK, radical Northern Ireland Protestant spokesperson Dr. Ian Paisley and a former BBC sportscaster who believes the world is ruled by a race of alien lizards. The best as well as most timely and unsettling of these essays follows Omar Bakri Mohammed, a radical Islamic militant, on his often bumbling effort to organize British Muslims into a jihad. (Bakri was arrested after September 11.) Ronson's journalism is motivated less out of a duty to inform the public than a desire to satisfy his own curiosity. At the heart of the book is Ronson's quest to find the Bilderberg Group, a secret cabal said to meet once a year to set the agenda of the "New World Order." Fortunately for the reader, his efforts lead somewhere: an informant tracks Bilderberg to a golf resort in Portugal; later, a prominent British politician and Bilderberg founder discusses it on the record. Once viewed up close through Ronson's light, ironic point of view, these "extremists" appear much less scary than their public images would suggest. It is how he reveals the all-too-real machinations of Western society's radical fringe and its various minions that makes this enjoyable work rather remarkable. (Jan.)Forecast: In the U.K., Ronson's book was accompanied by a five-part BBC documentary, which helped make him into a star. If he can capitalize on media appearances here, this may turn into a quick cult hit.

From Library Journal
British journalist and filmmaker Ronson spent the last five years with extremists: religious fundamentalists in Great Britain, Texas, and Cameroon; white supremacists in Arkansas, Michigan, and Idaho; and New World Order conspiracy chasers in Portugal and California. Despite their differences, all seem to believe that the world is controlled by an elite group known as "them." Although one may not find, say, the Ku Klux Klan funny on the surface, Ronson, well known for his "Human Zoo" column in the Guardian, makes each essay engaging by pointing out the irony of it all and accentuating the characters' foibles. He also presents their humanity the same humanity they would deny to others. Yet between the lines of satire, the extremists are unmasked for what they really are. They come off, above all, as mundane. This book was accompanied in Britain by a five-part TV documentary, The Secret Rulers of the World. Recommended for all academic and public libraries. Very interesting and informative
By Lisa
I am a junior in high school and for my english class we were asked to pick a nonfiction book to read. Our teacher said it could be anything we were interested in and immediately I thought about psychology, and more specifically psychopathy. I was instantly draw into this book because of my own fascination of the topic. The Psychopath Test by Jon Ronson is a very interesting book that takes you through psychopathy and the mental illness “industry”. The book primarily focuses on different cases of violence or murder done by psychopaths. The author believes that psychopaths are living with us and are just pretending to be normal, because they are very good at acting like everyone else. He is relaying information to the audience about how psychopaths think and function and to also show others how you can use Bob Hare’s Psychopath Checklist to identify some. Ronson also explores the mental illnesses industry and specifically medication being prescribed to deal with mental illnesses and how medication can be misdiagnosed. The book does not just list a lot of facts and rely information to a point where is it hard to grasp, Ronson takes such a big topic like psychology and psychopathy and describes it in a way that is easy to understand. The book includes different case studies involving crimes done by psychopaths, interviews Ronson leads with potential psychopaths, and much more. There is not one moment in this book where I was bored, yet I was still able to grasp so much material. I think this book would be a really great read for other high school students and anyone older because it is an average book that is easy to read yet I was able to retain so much information from this book.

More Please

I have never said this before, but I wish this books was as long as War and Peace. Jon picks the the most interesting topics to write about and this piece on extremists written before 9/11 has to be his best. I have read several of the people he follows including Alex Jones and David Icke just because the culture of conspiracy fascinates me. I cannot tell if these folks have a mental illness with powerful fixed delusions or are genius money makers tapping into gullible paranoia. Perhaps they even speak some truth with a different version of history and reality like a right wing Noam Chomsky or Howard Zinn. I just know that I'm going to read all of Ronson's books stat.

Good overall, could have explained some things a bit more
By Amazon Customer
I'm quickly becoming a fan of Jon Ronson. This book was informative and humorous and left me with a desire to know a bit more about some of the topics he touched on in the book, which sent me down the wikipedia rabbit hole for a few days after reading it. It gets 4 stars because of that--there were a couple things that I thought Ronson could have addressed a bit more thoroughly, especially since he kept coming back to them time and again throughout the book. But overall it's an informative and entertaining read.

Stepping Out of Self-Deception: The Buddha's Liberating Teaching of No-Self, by Rodney Smith

Anatta is the Buddhist teaching on the nonexistence of a permanent, independent self. It’s a notoriously puzzling and elusive concept, usually leading to such questions as, “If I don’t have a self, who’s reading this sentence?” It’s not that there’s no self there, says Rodney Smith. It’s just that the self that is reading this sentence is a configuration of elements that at one time did not exist and which at some point in the future will disperse. Even in its present existence, it’s more a temporary arrangement of components rather than something solid. Anatta is a truth the Buddha considered to be absolutely essential to his teaching. Smith shows that understanding this truth can change the way you relate to the world, and that the perspective of selflessness is critically important for anyone involved in spiritual practice. Seeing it can be the key to getting past the idea that spirituality has something to do with self-improvement, and to accessing the joy of deep insight into reality.

From Publishers Weekly
Rodney Smith (Lessons from the Dying), a Seattle insight meditation teacher and former hospice director, argues that the core of Buddhist wisdom is the nonexistence of the self (anatta). But even dedicated practitioners find this teaching difficult, he argues: Through all our techniques and procedures, the sense–of-I remains the cornerstone of our existence. Focusing on Buddhisms eightfold path, Smith tries to jolt the reader out of this belief in a separate self. He emphasizes the importance of discovery and experimentation, following the Buddhas dictum of testing principles rather than accepting dogma. A sometimes idiosyncratic terminology reflects Smiths own journey from reliance on spiritual teachers to detailed investigation. Acute insights mingle with vague abstractions: We only lose sight of unity; it never leaves us. He critiques what the late influential Tibetan Buddhist teacher Chogyam Trungpa considered spiritual materialism--attachment to particular methods or experiential states, especially in the Western pursuit of psychological health. Additional concrete examples and tighter editing would have made this book more approachable, but Smiths examination of a profound teaching is thought provoking.

Review
“Acute insights…Smith’s examination of a profound teaching is thought-provoking.”—Publishers Weekly

“Smith successfully approaches the Buddhist doctrine of anatta (no-self), which is a concept that is most difficult at the best of times.”—The Middle Way: Journal of the Buddhist Society

“Every so often a book appears that revitalizes our understanding of who we are and what our lives are about. Stepping Out of Self-Deception is such a book. A wonderfully fresh and beautifully written investigation of the path of awakening, it also challenges many of our assumptions along the way.”—Joseph Goldstein, author of One Dharma and Insight Meditation: The Practice of Freedom

“The Buddhist doctrine of anatta (no-self) seems quite counterintuitive to the Western mind: we may not be sure of much, but aren't we sure we are here? Descartes says as much. Rodney Smith succeeds masterfully in laying bare the self/non-self doctrine and its many insidious misunderstandings that more often than not result in our using spiritual practice to reinforce the very pain we hoped it would liberate us from. He makes it clear that the Buddhist goal is not self-improvement or self-elimination but rather the radical recognition that we have never been isolated, we have always belonged. I am deeply moved by this intelligent, practical, and challenging look at the Buddhist path for our time and place.”—Zoketsu Norman Fischer, author of Sailing Home and Taking Our Places: The Buddhist Path to Truly Growing Up

“I found this book extremely clear and helpful. Rodney is able to explain concepts that are generally hard to comprehend, and make them readily accessible. His words are written from the heart, which is where this book resonates.”—Sharon Salzberg, author of Lovingkindness and Faith: Trusting Your Own Deepest Experience

“Rodney Smith humanizes the Buddhist path. He probes ‘no-self ’ but in so doing reveals himself to be honest, humble, and wise. His writing makes this most elusive concept come alive.”—Mark Epstein, MD, author of Thoughts without a Thinker and Going to Pieces without Falling Apart

“Rodney Smith’s terrific new book will help us step out of the vicious cycle of self-deception and into the illumined realm of self-knowledge and spiritual realization. His deep, long term of Buddhist practice and liberating wisdom combined with a vocation of service work in the field of death and dying has perfectly equipped him to bring together here the best of East and West in elucidating how we ourselves can explore and penetrate the inner dynamics of identity and self, no-self, transpersonal being, and discover the complete being of our innate Buddhaness, the radiant Buddha-nature.”—Lama Surya Das, author of The Mind Is Mightier Than the Sword and Awakening the Buddha Within

FRESH AND CLEAR
By Russell Smith
I borrowed this book from the library and have been reading it slowly and savoring it. I realize I will have to buy it so I can reread it, underline passages and take the insights deeply to heart-- it is that sort of book.

True, as a previous reviewer mentioned, it is not easy reading, but I value this. Rodney Smith has made the effort to use language that actually corresponds to his experience, rather than relying on over-used Dharma cliches. For me, this brings a freshness and vitality to the book. Even insights I am familiar with come alive in a new way.

Rodney Smith is has taught Insight Meditation for decades and has directed Hospice programs for many years. He studied with Ajahn Buddhadasa in Thailand but also sites dialogues with the Vedanta sage Shri Nisargadatta as having a great impact on him. This book should appeal not only to Buddhists but to readers having an interest in Advaita Vedanta and contemporary non-dualist teachers like Eckhart Tolle.

The author is fearless in confronting the many ways spiritual practice ends up supporting the ego it supposedly is challenging. Consider this quote: "I have seen many practitioners overstay their efforts and arrest their understanding...
They feel safe and unassailable, expertly following their breath for hours according to Buddha's instruction... But scratch beneath the surface and their hearts are dry... They have opted out of wonder for the mental fulfillment of precision."

This book is targeted at lay Buddhist practitioners with a full engagement in the the world. "The lay Buddhist does not have the luxury to pull back from the barrage of experiences coming forth throughout the day." "Nothing is denied, nothing is avoided, and the world is allowed to make its impact, to affect us in whatever way it does." "The Dharma is always inclusive, and in the end everything needs our attention and understanding, never our dismissal."

A few more quotes:
"The sense-of-self lacks faith in anything outside of its own influence. Life is perceived as an obstacle to our power and must be aligned by force of will to work to our advantage." {Sound familiar? Sure does to this reviewer.} "Faith is the opposite of control, and expresses itself energetically as releasing our need to have everything go our way. Faith is the intuitive sense that something beyond our power holds life and has always held it..."

"The primary intention begins to work through us when we are radically accountable for the pain of our wanting. Radical accountability starts by saying 'I want' and drops all externaliztion of the need. Next we drop the references to 'we' and the energy stays with the wanting and goes no further... We hold our ground and in doing so there is a welling of confidence and coursge... The heart fully engages reality and says 'Come what may, this is where I stand' and faces the wanting until it disappears into emptiness."

This last practice is explored fully throughout the book. These two long quotes give you a sense of Smith's language. I finally want to add that I believe this book would be appreciated not only by Buddhists but also open-minded Christians. Rodney Smith writes beautifully about surrender, faith and "self-naughting," offering a perspective that many Christians could benefit from.

A Rare and Valuable Addition to Buddhist Teachings
By Michaelinwa
I was very eager to read this book because I admire Rodney Smith as a teacher. He brings a unique perspective to Buddhist practice, and is often very thought provoking. However, I do find many of his lines of thought to be very complex, and not readily understood. I would consider myself an average meditator with about average exposure to Buddhist ideas. I am not, as a rule, intimidated by complicated ideas or challenging books. Any reader of this book should be warned that they may find much of the discussion to be very challenging to understand. I often had a sense that I just wanted the author to state in more direct and easily understood language what he was trying to convey. Now, having said that, I did find some very useful concepts in this book. In particular, the notion that our practice may be working to build a sense of self that is contrary to what we are trying to achieve is very helpful, and not a message I have learned from other teachers. But overall I felt that author either had much, much more to convey than I was able to pick up from the lengthy discussion, or he uses far more words to explain his ideas than are necessary. Truthfully, I think he has much more to say that I can comprehend, but that just makes this book somewhat frustrating because I was ready to absorb his ideas, but simply could not truly understand many of them. As a final note, I suspect many readers will find this book light on how to integrate the concepts into daily practice. This is certainly not a "how to" book by any stretch of the imagination.

Update to my initial review: I went back to this book and reread it; something I rarely do with books of any sort. I must say, after the second read my respect for this author's ideas as presented in the book have increased greatly. I think what the author teaches in this book is essential. Is it an easy read? No. But I think that aspect of the book is a result of the nature of what the author is presenting. These are not concepts that are well known or intuitive to the average Buddhist or meditator. In fact, I suspect these concepts are not well known to even to those with many years of practice. Additionally, the concepts do not lend themselves easily to being communicated. However, I now see that I am running into exactly the issues of "self" finding it's way into my practice in a manner that is not useful. Were it not for this book, I'm not sure I would recognize that fact, and I suspect I would be at a loss as to how to address the issues. While the author does not present a sort of "step-by-step" approach to resolving the challenges he describes, there is enough guidance in this book to help me navigate my way through the difficulties of dealing with self as it emerges in my practice.

I get the sense that Rodney Smith can articulate these ideas because he has been there, and has struggled personally with the issues he describes. It seems to me that Mr. Smith has done a great service to Buddhists and meditators by at least pointing us in the general direction in which we should go. When an author can give us a new message that potentially can save us untold frustration, I think that's a rare gift to practitioners.

I strongly recommend this book, especially to more experienced meditators who I believe will eventually run into the challenges Rodney Smith describes in this book. If you find reading this book a challenge, give it a chance. Take your time, and be willing to reread as much as necessary to find the important messages this author is presenting.

Absolutely Brilliant
By Inner Adventurer
What a wonderful surprise this book is. I've been unclear about Buddha's teaching on `no-self ' inspite of reading and trying to understand it. This book is one of those rare books that actually takes you to the experience, not just more information. They say that when somebody really knows what they are talking about they can explain it to anyone. I get it now, what's that worth? Thank you for taking the time to write this treasure.

Kindle Edition is Flawed
By Amazon Customer
This book looks promising, but it is hard to judge by the Kindle edition. Whole sections are missing; the charts are barely legible, and everytime the author begins to discuss something interesting... the next page turns out to be blank. I am hoping Amazon will refund/exchange my kindle copy for a print edition so I can actually read the book.

Right on the mark
By Andrew W
This is a great book for runners of all abilities looking to fine tune their training programs for multiple race distances from the 5k to the marathon. The book provides detailed, step-by-step instructions on how to build a customized training program for the individual runner and tailor it to each runner's strengths, weaknesses and time constraints. Base mileage, hills, speedwork, tempo, long run, and goal pace training segments are all provided, along with advice on how to schedule each specific segment and Greg's McMillan's general philosophies on running and training guidance. The book is concise and easy to follow, yet well written in a manner that connects with both beginners and more advanced runners. I've been an avid adherent to Greg's training philosophies since I began running and have PR'd every race distance and qualified for Boston multiple times using his advice and training programs. They work and have allowed me to build mileage, endurance and stamina while avoiding injury. I highly recommend this book (and McMillan's training philosophies generally) to any runner who follows McMillan Running or is looking to change-up or enhance their training program.
