Executive Summary of The First Time Manager
By KristalClear
The First-Time Manager by Loren B. Belker and Gary S. Topchick was a very informational book directed towards newly appointed managers. It was very insightful and provided a great deal of useful information. One of the many key points I found in the book was that a manager need not be a dictator or start out just bossing people around, rather they should be authoritative but be open and try to learn how things work before just taking control of everything. One of the major points of Manager-Employee relationships was building trust with the employees and treating them as equals rather than as lower level workers. The Manager establishes this trust by being a good listener. The amount of listening a manger does was pointed out a good bit throughout the book. One of my favorite parts on the topic of listening was this line: "These managers should remember they have two ears and one mouth; therefore they ought to do twice as much listening as talking. " This is true of any situation. Not just in the workplace. I found this book to be very informative and helpful especially in the areas of how to handle personal business in the workplace and the types of things that good managers do, such as praising employees for good deeds and insuring everyone is working together. It also gave me courage and made me feel less afraid to have to deal with things such as terminating an employee. I feel much better about having a management position from reading this book, and I will certainly be going back to read it once I am a manager to be sure I am being the best I can be for my employees, because I would like my colleagues to enjoy working for me, because an enjoyable workplace increases productivity.

The First-Time Manager
By Amazon Customer
I was recently promoted to manager and thought that this would be a good intro book, to get my head in the game related to managing people. I had already been acting as a lead and my manager had been handing me various items to manage so I was beginning to be prepared for the job full time.

First impression:
What I have found is that a lot of the information in this book really is just common sense and being a good person. I think that that book is a good resource for getting you thinking in the right direction from the get go, but it is not going to be a good resource long term for any sort of management methods or philosophies.

What I think I have learned:
It MIGHT be a book I refer back to from time to time just to validate that I am sticking true to "the path of good management", but there will be many more things that I can and will learn from my tenure as a manager, management mentors/colleagues and from other books that I will eventually read.

Overall impression of this book:
I go believe that this is a good book to have read. It is going to help point me in the right direction. It is going to help me with bringing lots of little details into focus. All of these things I already knew a little bit about... or knew were things that I needed to be aware of. This book just helps to bring them together in a more specific point of view.

Conclusion:
I will say this. If you have read one or two `new manager' types of books you are probably done. No need to read another. I say this because I am currently also reading "The New Boss: How to Survive the First 100 Days, by Peter Fischer", and so far half way into that book a lot of the information is much the same.

I am glad I read this book, because it DOES have good information to help me focus. But I think that maybe I am finding that the book, "The New Boss: How to Survive the First 100 Days, by Peter Fischer"... was a little better fit for me and my needs.

If I do read another `new manager' book, it would need to be from another point of view... written for MY manager or my direct reports, or in some way try to be completely different from what I have already been exposed to.

Management mentality
By Paolo & Francesca
This was a good book about management, especially when it comes to managing your employees, but overall it is geared more at advanced managers than first time managers. Few first time managers have multiple employees to manage and do salary administrations. Most still have a lot of work of their own and are managed by other managers. This book spends a lot of time on how to deal with your employees and almost no time on dealing with superiors or colleagues on the same level. I wish there was more about project management, not just employee management, and how to do your job well other than being the favorite boss. However, it does cover in great detail topics such as conducting performance appraisals, how to hire someone, fire someone, and building trust and confidence in employees, topics that a newbie would be anxious to learn. The author emphasizes a lot treating people with respect, developing others, listening, and motivating. By being genuinely interested and caring of your employees' ambitions and work satisfaction, you will inspire them to perform at their best and engender their loyalty. This is excellent advice. The warm tone, polished writing, and short chapters makes this book easy to read as well.
