No manufacturing, No index

Presents the concept of 3D MODEL-BASED CAD as the basis for an engineering and enterprise structure. As a plus, it does this without reference to any specific software package, treating the software as the engineering commodity that it really is. One of my problems with this book is that it is very general in nature, and doesn't elaborate on any of the troublesome details which inevitably become the pitfalls that allow the software people to oversell expensive solutions. Another problem with the book is that it does not address the problem of manufacturing real products from MODEL-BASED CAD. While this book show shows a few 3D printed parts, it does not address how MODEL-BASED CAD is applied in the hot and nasty real world of manufacturing, where 99 percent of manufactured goods are in some way touched by a human. The other problem with this book is that there is no index to allow quick reference. You may argue that at a slim 139 pages, an index is unnecessary, but given modern publishing software, such an argument is at least moot, if not just plain lazy.

Great Resource!

I just finished the book, Re-Use Your CAD: The Model-Based Handbook by Jennifer Herron. When I saw Handbook in the title, I thought it would be just another dry reference book, but I was pleasantly surprised that it was much more than that — it’s a very good learning resource.
The book not only discusses MBE/MBD workflows, life cycles, and methods, it also covers the roles and responsibilities of the people performing the myriad tasks involved in designing, engineering, and manufacturing a product.
There are many graphic charts, tables, and illustrations throughout the book that supplement what is being discussed in the text. The two complement each other well and make the concepts easier to grasp, not to mention providing nice breaks on what could be dry material if text alone. The author also provides several real-world examples, rules, tips, and best practices throughout the book to reinforce concepts.
If you are new to the concepts of MBE/MBD and want to learn about an innovative design approach that will probably improve your products and processes, then this book is definitely for you.

Get Started, or Get Better by improving your engineering processes

If you're looking to push "Model Based" into your engineering processes, and if you aren't you should be, I would say this is definitely the first source you want to have on hand to understand the needs and nuances involved. The author provides topic introductory material and what must be an experienced inside view of the technical, cost, and human issues involved in developing a successful implementation. I've already loaned my copy out, but I know it will come back to me through a more productive, reusable, product development world.
