Tapan Munroe is a nationally-known economist with expertise in the areas of regional economics, banking, and high-tech industry analysis. He was the Chief Economist for Pacific Gas & Electric. A visiting scholar, adjunct professor, and department chairman at a number of prestigious universities worldwide, he also earned the Kiriyama Distinguished Professorship for Asian Economies at the University of San Francisco. As a widely-published author and popular speaker, Tapan has been a frequent commentator on regional and national radio and TV, including KRON-TV and KGO-TV (San Francisco), CNBS (Los Angeles/New York), Dow Jones Investors Network, and Bloomberg News Service. Excellent Silicon Valley perspective and summary

Dr. Munroe has decades of first-hand experience analyzing the economy of Silicon Valley and California, which comes through in this excellent coverage of how Silicon Valley got where it is and where it goes from here.

Although both broad and thorough in its analysis, this book is easy to read and leaves the reader with a very good grasp of what particular characteristics Silicon Valley has, and what the risks are to it in the future. It is especially strong in discussion of the various social and professional networks.

Digby Tantam is Clinical Professor of Psychotherapy at the University of Sheffield, and Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist and Psychotherapist for Sheffield Care Trust. He founded an Asperger Syndrome clinic in 1980, and has written numerous articles and books on autism spectrum disorders.

Uncomfortable to read but thought-provoking

The title made me feel very uncomfortable; it seems to suggest that the world can choose not to encounter autistic spectrum disorder (ASD). Once I got into the book, the author's viewpoint became less unclear. He proposes that the one fundamental problem underlying ASD is "impaired nonverbal communication." He discusses the concept from research and from anecdotal examples, and distinguishes cases that don't seem to fit the premise. I understand him to say that even though his premise cannot at this time be proven with science through neuroimaging data, that the concept will help in the understanding of ASD.

I was left unimpressed with the author's repeated usage of computer terms for the human brain, such as the "interbrain connection" being similar to the network that is the Internet; "cache" for certain abilities or knowledge, being socially "offline"; and the section on "cybernetic parallels for networks mediated by nonverbal communication." Certainly, many people with ASD would be comfortable with Dr. Tantum's terminology, given the predilection of many to focus comfortably on computers, but I had difficulty keeping track of what he meant.

That said, I absolutely reveled in the section near the end that discussed the psychology of bullying and why society cannot afford bullying. The Aspie in my family who was bullied throughout the seven years he spent in the K-12 public school system emerged with post-traumatic stress disorder. This played a large part in his needing a medical withdrawal from graduate school a few years later, which is a tragedy. I would love to have every teacher & school administrator required to study the psychology of bullying to the extent they would start protecting the victims actively and not be afraid to sanction the bullies.

A Book You Cannot Afford to Pass Up

Can the World Afford Autistic Spectrum Disorder?: Nonverbal Communication, Asperger Syndrome and the Interbrain by Digby Tantam, Ph.D., is a penetrating look by a practicing scientist at the known science and personal observations of the operation and struggles of those afflicted with this type of brain structure.

Tantam describes the behavioral and social functioning of the person with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) with some technical terminology yet with good translation of that terminology so that readers with broad educational backgrounds and experience can well understand his discussions.

In his Introduction (P. 20), Tantam states, "What the world affords to most of us [those with what he describes as 'neurotypical brains' or normal brains] is a structure, or a web of subliminal nonverbal communication that points us in directions to go, regulates our minds, indicates whether our beliefs have, or have not, social approval, and generally guides us."

He uses the analogy of a computer connected to the Internet in a continuous, ongoing process of gathering and exchanging information with other similarly connected computers occasionally receiving software upgrades that alter how our computer functions, possibly permanently, in a flowing dynamic process, of which we are mostly unaware.

Contrariwise, the person with ASD is analogous to a person with a computer that is not connected to the Internet. They don't have the benefit of communication with other computers in a network with the give and take allowing them to remain continuously "in touch" with one another and benefiting from the occasional operation-altering software updates that affect the whole community.

He carefully points out that the person with ASD is unaware of the customary nonverbal social cues, such as facial expressions, gestures, and body positioning, governing the behavior of most of us in society. In other words, the person with ASD simply doesn't "get it" when it comes to interpersonal relationships. Persons with ASD are aware that something is missing; they just don't know what it is. They are confused and often embarrassed. It is as though they have done something wrong, and they understand that they are not to do "it" again; they simply don't know what "it" is. Of course, there is a broad range of degrees of the impairment of nonverbal communication from mild to severe.

Tantam goes on to discuss channels of communication such as voice pitch and volume, body posture, gaze direction, and gesture as well as their respective functions of relative social status, alertness/arousal/engagement, emotional expression, and commentary on the production of speech and its focus. It is apparent that when these methods of communication are impaired, the person with ASD is dysfunctional in the social setting to a varying, possibly severe, degree.

His illustration of the profound importance of the specialized functions of many gestures we take for granted is seen in the hand gesture of the circle formed by the thumb and index finger presented with the palm opened in the direction of the listener. It means "OK," of course, yet we use it and see it frequently without ever analyzing it to any degree.

He gives many examples to illustrate that impairment of nonverbal communication is the fundamental brain problem in the person with ASD, showing the struggles those persons have in everyday living in society but especially in the family setting.

In Chapter 7 he focuses on getting the diagnosis and getting it right for the sake of all concerned. The proper diagnosis is vitally important in helping the ASD patients so that those around them properly deal with the results. Tantam uses the example that society will make some accommodations for the partially deaf person, but it is the responsibility of that patient to let the rest of us know what the problem is so we can respond appropriately. At the same time, it is primarily the responsibility of the deaf person to make the necessary adjustments needed to function in society.

A proper diagnosis, properly explained to the patient and any family members, needs to provide a new way of dealing with old problems. Once a person with an ASD and those caring for him begin to see now so many apparently disconnected problems come together as getting consequences of impaired nonverbal communication, there is often a sense of having finally gotten a problem to deal with.

Can society afford to formally "recognize" ASD and those who suffer it? Tantam gets back to this point in Chapter 8 and points out how some of the more severely affected people are usually bullied and that that can have longterm adverse consequences. He also points out that many are unable to find regular work. Furthermore, the medications available are expensive and not recognized by all authorities as being effective. However, there are intervention techniques that are effective if applied properly and early in the patient's life.

Certainly persons affected by ASD will not simply go away; so the real issue is, "Can society afford to exclude people with ASD?" Tantum makes a very convincing argument that we cannot afford to exclude them.

I highly recommend this book. It is a very well-written and comprehensive book for the layman - the person with ASD, family members and friends, and other members of society. It also gives excellent insight into the patients' struggles for those professionals who may care for them and to the educators, politicians, and community leaders who are faced with dealing with these patients and their struggles.

Digby Tantam's expertise blighted my life

Digby Tantam has not always been an expert in autistic spectrum disorder. He was once an expert on post natal depression, and the treatment I received whilst in his care has blighted my life. Admittedly, I was ill when I was first admitted to Withington Hospital Mother and Baby Unit, but when I recovered and noticed that my baby will ill, he treated my concerns as delusions - prescribing powerful anti-psychotic drugs and 21 ECT treatments.

Because my baby's infection was ignored, eventually significant levels of E coli were found in her urine, which, it later transpired, caused her to develop a vesico-ureteric reflux.

At the time, Digby Tantam informed all concerned that the reason for my so called delusions was because I hated my baby and wished her dead. My experience at his hands can only be described as a living hell.

Because of his complete lack of understanding of my condition I would not rate his views and on autistic spectrum disorder or any other mental health condition.

About the Author

Robert Dover is Senior Lecturer in International Relations and Director of Taught Postgraduate Programmes at Loughborough University. He is author of The Europeanization of British Defence Policy 1997–2005 (2007) and co-author, with Michael S. Goodman, of Spinning Intelligence: Why Intelligence Needs the Media, Why the Media Needs Intelligence (2009).

Michael S. Goodman is Reader in the Department of War Studies at King's College London. The best collection in English -- bold, innovative, essential

Routledge's managing editor for this collection, and the editors themselves, one of whom I know personally, have created the single best collection in the English language, and explicitly superior to the Oxford counterpart that is lacking in scope of coverage and diversity of authorship. This is the first book to fully satisfy me (in one book, for the five volume standard in the field see Strategic Intelligence [5 volumes] (Intelligence and the Quest for Security) (v. 1-5).

The book is opened by Loch Johnson, long one of my heroes (and with Britt Snider, one of two people to serve on both the Church and Aspin-Brown Commissions). His section concludes that intelligence studies still lacks deep credible understanding of how intelligence does (or does not) influence policy (and strategy and acquisition and operations), when intelligence works or does not, and how, exactly intelligence producers an consumers get on. I have my own answers, shared with General Tony Zinni, USMC, among others: intelligence does NOT influence anything of substance; it costs too much for what little it produces (4% "at best"), and it ignores 90% of the potential consumers of intelligence (see my free online article, "Intelligence for the President -- AND Everyone Else."

From Lock we move to Michael Warner on theories of intelligence, this is a seminal piece both a stellar and nuanced definition of what intelligence is, and consideration of intelligence risk. In this section I am also captured by R. Gerald Hughes on "Strategists and Intelligence," this is a thoughtful read to which I would add the opening of Ada Bozeman's Strategic Intelligence and Statecraft: Selected Essays (Brassey's Intelligence & National Security Library).

My own chapter, "The Evolving Craft of Intelligence" has been brilliantly edited by Rob Dover, and is also by permission free online at Phi Beta Iota the Public Intelligence Blog, where it is available in full text online easily translated on the spot into multiple languages. I distinguish between three eras of intelligence, secret war, strategic analytics, and smart nation/multinational everything. The first two have failed expensively, the USG is still fighting me on the third, but victory from below is inevitable. I praise the managing editor and contributing editors for allowing ten graphics. This is my best work to date, and complements the concluding chapter of Counterterrorism and Open Source Intelligence (Lecture Notes in Social Networks), also free online, "The Ultimate Hack Re-Inventing Intelligence to Re-Engineer Earth," also free online.

The historical chapters are small gems, focusing on signals, human, economic,measurements & signatures, and open source intelligence. Signals does not quite do justice to the expensive insanity and inffectiveness of NSA (and the various foreign services it subsidizes); human and open would do well to integrate more of my work, particularly my three monographs at the Strategic Studies Institute (especially the latest, defining OSINT as a sub-set of HUMINT, and fifteen slices of HUMINT, only four of which are classified), but on balance I find each and every one of these contributions top-notch.

The twelve chapters on individual country systems are superb in an of themselves -- I particularly appreciate those on China, France, India, and Spain -- but we are long over-due for a proper global companion that looks at the intelligence systems of, among others, Brazil, Indonesia, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Uzbekistan, to name just a few that are of particular interest to me. I would be most interested in seeing Routledge follow up on this existing volume with a companion on others sytems that is combined with a deep look at the persistent lack of intelligence with integrity across the eight tribes of information (academic, civil society including labor and religion, commerce especially small, government especially local, law enforcement especially local, media, military, and non-governmental/non-profit. The ignorance and information ineffectiveness of the United Nations, to take one example, can simply not be under-stated.

The nine concluding chapters on contemporary challenges are all written by world-class contributors and present authoritative treatments each worth as a starting point for follow-on owrk. Where I am disappointed is in the absence of any chapter on the technical obstacles to information-sharing (a retarded predatory industry for whom Open Source Everything (OSE) is anathema -- see my tiny url list /OSE-LIST -- and a continued lack on the urgency of achieving holistic intelligence that integrates cradle to grave true cost economics, and is truly multinational in its conceptualization and execution.

The bibliography is superbly integrated and as with most top books where I am deeply invested, I started there. If I were to improve this book "as is" I would add an index -- a really good triple entry index (ABC, BAC, CAB). That is an understabable but disappointing oversight, particularly since the US-centric runner-up does have an index (I refer to The Oxford Handbook of National Security Intelligence (Oxford Handbooks).

Must be 1st book

Glad it was $.99 because I hated it. Horrible editing, and a very disjointed story with so many jumps in illogic that it was comical. Being able to immediately communicate with an alien race Seemingly in a matter of minutes, and miraculosly be able to construct ships at will is not even in a believable story in SciFi.

When I purchased the book there were no reviews to read;but I took a chance.That was a mistake.So when I went back on amazon to get another book I noticed two reviews of the book.(Scifi Fanactic & A west) After reading them I realized between the two of them they perfectly covered everything I thought was wrong with the story. ditto.

"Alien Civil War"... so bad it's almost funny.

"Alien Civil War: First Human Contact" is the first book in 'The Knife Series' by author Dennis Hiatt. This e-book was re-edited and posted on March 18, 2013
This Kindle e-book was a 271 Kb download (approx. 126 printed pages) and sold for $0.99 at the time of writing this review.

Spoilers

Captain DuCreux of the space warship 'Detroit' comes across a huge object. He finds it is an alien spaceship, sends a boarding party only to awaken the dormant life on board... a cautious friendship ensue. However old enemies are hunting this alien ship... and our story unfolds.

End Spoilers

Some thoughts on "Alien Civil War'...

1.) I'd read some other reviews of this work that noted the number of spelling errors, etc. Maybe some of these problems were addressed and corrected with the latest re-edit, because I did not notice many.

2.) I checked the product page on amazon.com and it's listed as Sci-Fi adventure. This then was either a serious attempt to write the tale of a prolonged space encounter with an alien species OR it was a tongue in cheek, space opera spoof or parody. If the former, then it contains some of the worst writing I've ever come across... if the latter, then it still contains some awful writing BUT it may have achieved its goal, because the story, told in the manner that it was, could not have been really taken seriously.

3.a) we have super computer Hal (sound kind of familiar?), the A.I. of the space fleet's flagship, who, on several occasions, tends to laugh 'evilly'.
3.b) nearly every sentient thing, be they people, aliens or computers tend to speak with 'graveled' voices. ('graveled', or a derivative, appeared 38 times... verified by the Kindle search function). Very noticeable.

4.a.) excessive detail with regards to numbers. A couple examples of many... five thousand, two hundred and sixteen missiles or one thousand, seven hundred and eighty two missing starships... countless exact numbers of drones, missiles, ships, people/aliens etc. were mentioned.

5.) there was almost no down time... from about 25% into this book, this tale was one long continuous space battle between the human/rebel alien fleet and the enemy alien ships. The problem was that I often had difficulty telling who was who, who was winning AND if someone won a battle then the losing side seemed to return 3 or 4 paragraphs later with new and better spaceships. It just went on and on and on.

5.) and finally, inane dialogues between people/aliens/computers; beings that were part of the hierarchy and chain of command. BUT having said that, there were a couple of conversations that made me laugh out loud... not sure if they were intended to be funny, or meant to be serious, but came across as incredibly stupid.

Conclusion:
So how to rate this...
a.) as a serious attempt to write a space novel that was terribly, terribly bad... or
b.) as a farce, space opera... that when looked at in that light, had some good moments.
Well, seeing no sign on the amazon product page that this was a humorous spoof, I'll opt for a poorly written Sci-Fi space novel.

Permission Granted- Take the Bible into Your Own Hands by Jennifer Grace Bird is an engaging book I highly recommend. I've been waiting for years for this type of book to be published. As an avid female reader, I've wanted to read a book that directly addressed complicated Biblical issues in an academic manner. In Bird's book, you won't find any humorous stories about everyday life. Instead, prepare yourself for a thought provoking study of difficult stories, people, and specific scripture found in both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible. The Garden of Eden, the role of women in the church and family, rape, and genocide are a few examples of the topics covered in this book.

Throughout the book, Bird encourages the reader to explore difficult issues through a non-traditional lens. The author provides historical detail and background from Hebrew and Greek translations to expand the reader's understanding of difficult concepts. Personally, I found the chapter about the role of women in marriage particularly fascinating. I really appreciated the author's research approach. A couple of times while reading, I had to put the book down and just think about the ideas presented. At no point in the book does Bird talk down to the reader. Instead, Bird is always affirming that it is ok if these topics are hard to reconcile. Bird's style is easy to read, a perfect mix of academic research and a conversational tone.

This book is appropriate to read as an individual and would also work as a small group study. Thought provoking questions are included with the chapters. Also, relevant scripture suggestions are made, but not included in the book. I suggest this book to a group that enjoys working through difficult topics and is comfortable with different points of view. Not everyone will be comfortable with the author's interpretation of particular texts. By the end of the book, I was curious to hear more about how the author worked through these issues on a personal level. Little is devoted to this, leaving the reader to ponder the book well after it is finished.

Wonderful and insightful. The book touches (and provides very satisfactory answers) on questions I've had about Christianity since I was a young Southern Baptist but was afraid to ask. Bird fervently invites the reader to investigate on their own terms---not to just take her word for it. Whether you agree with her or not, it's a great book to utilize when establishing intellectual religious dialogue with someone. Finally, it's very well-written and concise; even if you're not well-versed in religious studies, Bird's explanations allow you to easily keep up with the presented concepts.

A real conversation starter

Got this book because it was on the PCUSA website and I felt it would be an interesting book for a small group study/discussion. A group of five of us from my church are meeting once a week with the goal of covering one chapter a week. Thus far, the material in the book has caused so much
discussion that we are falling a little behind. I have recommended the book to several people and have even told them to do an exercise from the first chapter just to give them an idea of what it's like. Read Genesis Chapter 1, then Chapter 2. Make a chart of the order things were created in the first chapter. Then go back and find when those same things were said to be created in the second chapter. Interesting. At times we feel perhaps the author is kind of snarky with her remarks, but that's just a personal thing for some of us. I think this book is best read when you have an opportunity to discuss it as you are reading. If I wasn't doing it in this group, I know I'd be pulling people aside to get their take on most of the material in it.

About the author: Patricia Pingry has written dozens of children's books and edited hundreds more. Among her best-known titles are The Story of Christmas, The Story of Easter, and The Story of George Washington. In all, her holiday, Bible story, and historical titles have sold more than 4 million copies. Patricia lives in Nashville, Tennessee, where she continues to write and develop children's projects.

About the illustrator: Meredith Johnson was an advertising art director for 23 years and now devotes much of her time to illustrating children's books. Meredith has illustrated nearly 100 books. She has two grown sons and lives in California with her husband.

Perfect little history lesson for my five-year-old.

I bought this to teach my five-year-old what the Fourth of July really means. She listened intently to the story, I thought It was a perfect teaching tool for my five-year-old. It was a very simple history lesson. Perfect!

I LOVE HER BOOKS!!!! They help educate young children with the real reason we celebrate holiday's mixed with the commercialized reason. They are perfect!!!
